National Archives Look Up Offer

I’m planning a trip to The National Archives in the near future.

Although I normally plan my trips to consume a full day down there, in this instance I may have a bit of spare time available.

I thought I’d try out a “look up service” for anyone not able to visit Kew.

If you have already researched a file and know what info you want from it, I’ll do the bizz for you while I’m down there. There is no charge for this.

I can’t see me having more than an hour to spare at the most, but if I can fit in one or maybe two “look ups”, then I’m happy to help out.

Let me know if I can be of assistance.

Thanks for your time with looking for it A.M.

Can I ask what reference was the mentioned list contained in?, so I can discount it in further searches.

Here are the results of the “look up” offer:-

Stu, a success. About a dozen pages of info on your Lanc.

Abadonna, not much joy for you. I looked thru the ORB but could not see any ref. to your Warwick or ASV Mk. 13. The ORB is typical of many I’ve looked at, i.e. mostly a monthly list of personnel posted in and out. Each month starts with a very brief summary of work undertaken and I’ve photographed the three months you were interested in, in case I missed something or there is info of use to you.

Ossington, your memory of about twenty pages on the Butterfly bombing of Grimsby is way out. Nearer two hundred in all! I copied it anyway, but only those pages referring to Grimsby. I ignored Cleethorpes, Lincoln and the other areas mentioned.

atbl12, quite by chance I stumbled across a long list of gun turret Stores Reference numbers. Yours isn’t on it!

Beermat, I’m afraid I was correct. Way too big of a file to wade through. Based on similarly tightly packed files I’ve studied, it would have taken an hour or more to trawl through it carefully enough to pick up any references which might interest you.

Rob, I’m not sure if I’ll repeat the offer. Even though my own look up list was relatively short, once you’re there and thinking hard, there’s always a ton of other stuff to look at. I put in 9 1/2 hours effort with a single ten minute break and still didn’t cover everything I wanted to. Maybe when the weather’s better and I spend a few days down there.

I’ve now got to sort out all the photos and parcel them up in some way so I’ll be in touch as and when.

Beermat, here’s your file:-

Hi Rob,

‘fraid so!

Just got back from a 400+ mile journey.

Mixed results, both from my own research and that undertaken on others’ behalf.

Will report back tomorrow after a (long) kip.

Hi All
I don’t think they would want all of them, just a few for the later “RAF14” wings etc, to give them something to go by.
I’d do it for them, but I don’t have a good enough camera, and am also having a few health issues etc, at the moment.

Hi Stu, should be fairly straightforward and its a subject close to my heart anyway.

7fl, There are hundreds, if not thousands of BE drawings at TNA. If Elvington want to pay my travel and accommodation costs for a month, I’m the man for the job!

Atbl12, I think you’re probably flogging a dead horse. I already have most of the turret APs from TNA and I did a quick look up when you emailed me. The problem is that not all the individual chapters in the AP1659 series quote the Stores References. This series covers all the early F.N., Bristol, B.P., Armstrong Whitworth and Vickers turrets, so that’s a lot of turrets that your Stores Ref. may apply to. When later turrets got their individual A.P., the Stores Ref. is usually quoted but I could not track yours down in any of them. Sorry!

Ossington, sounds do-able if time permits, so fingers crossed.

Abadonna and Beermat, sounds like too much research in too little time I’m afraid. I’ll take your queries with me but please don’t hold your breath!

I think we’d better consider this topic closed for now, but if it works out, I may re-open it for a future visit.

It’s got to be worth a try.

Yes please! If you could look at AVIA 8/193, “Harvard: purchase from North American Aviation Inc. for use as trainer and target towing”, and note/copy any reference between 1938 and 1940 to the major modifications to the rear fuselage (especially Anglo-US correspondence and with particular regard to dates) that would be enormously helpful to something I am working on – and might help shift a view of this particular story. Many thanks in advance if you can do this (I am in Whitby now and it’s not easy for me)*.

One file I once had a brief glimpse of, but ran out of copying time, was HO198/8. Bomb Census Report for Grimsby. I’d appreciate a copy.

Hi Al
The guys at Elvington may be interested, as they are after info and drawings for the BE2c.
