National Crime Agency sounds an alert – again

I mentioned this a year or two ago. Once again it comes to the fore – why ? My suspicion antenna is on full quiver alert.

A recent press report issued by the National Crime Agency revives interest in what they allege are the shadowy comings and goings of light aircraft allegedly landing copious quantities of dope and immigrants at remote and seldom visited landing strips.

The NCA beyond mentioning the availability of 3,000 such strips in Britain, do not actually say that anyone has been apprehended. For my part, I frequently visit some of these out of the way strips and have never seen any activity of any kind that could be construed as legal, illegal or otherwise.

So, why have the NCA brought this to the fore again ? Keep us all on our toes? Is it some kind of precursor to some sort of control system? I thought that is what satellites were for; we’re told one can read a newspaper headline from 50 miles up. So an aircraft unloading four immigrants or half a ton of dope should be a piece of cake. Perhaps things do not work as we have been told !

There is some opinion that it was actually an initiative to get us (pilots) ‘on-side’, keeping our eyes open for suspicious happenings.

But as always with these things one or two of the newspapers have ‘sexed-up’ the story to stir up their readers into a froth of indignation about back-door immigration, people smuggling, drugs and all the rest.
