Back on Jan. 04, 1989 just before the dogfight between the USN F-14As and the LARAF MiG-23MFs, the following communication was made.
At 11:59:41 -From Alpha Bravo (aboard the USS Kennedy) to the two F-14A Tomcats on patrol at the southern most CAP station (“Closeout” is the E-2C Hawkeye);
“Closeout ah, Warning yellow, weapons hold, I repeat, warning yellow, weapons hold. Alpha Bravo out.”
That message gave the F-14s permission to fire if they felt they were doing it in self-defense. Now, if they were in the Aleutian Island group (same time frame) not to far from the USSR and Soviet interceptors were approaching in a threatening manor, the USAF and USN has a policy of letting the opponent take the first shot, what would the expression be, “Warning (what color?), weapons tight!”
Does anyone know how the directive would be phrased as??
