Im wondering who here plays naval combat computer games. Dangerous Waters is a recent one that looks good, Ill admit Im not good at complicated strategy games where you have to monitor sensors. How long does it take to play through a game like that? I would imagine it takes all day to play in real time. One that I like is Silent Hunter III, the WW2 german U-Boat game. It has amazing graphics, you can pan the camera over the entire combat area. But I was really disappointed in quick action mode that I couldnt sink ships with dead reckoning, you have to look up the ship in the ID catalog or you cant sink it. I also belong to the online group Sea Lords that plays Age of Sail 2 online http://www.sealordsvf.org/index3.htm

I know one of the main guys an that place Mix, I just emailed him. He’s made keen on Subs but would never serve because he doesn’t want a hair cut (go figure).
Cool, see if you can get some inside info on what the good games to download are. Having to try out all those games on your own would be a hassle.

I came across this site http://www.naval-warfare.net/ which has what looks like are a lot of amateur and open source naval games. I think in the strategy genre, amateur can be better than professional.

Harpoon is the best series for naval and Air warfare I’ve seen. Harpoon 3 is my favourite as it allows you to really micromanage things. It does however take a bit of effort to learn how to play it.
It’s not perfect, it has bugs for sure and the GUI is kinda dated but it has a good following on the net and the game is till being deveoped.
The ADF use a version of it in their simulation office.

I’ve played Fleet Command and it was pretty good, sadly I lost it. I have Harpoon the original and that is ok.
The Problem with many of Jane’s games is that they sold out, EA (Electronic Arts) bought their gaming side and thus ruined any plausability in them.
I also have Seawolf, but it’s not worth mentioning.

Well if graphics are important to you then the Harpoon series probably isn’t for you. The series is based on the tabletop rules created by Larry Bond (Military author in his own right and a contributor to Clancy’s RSR). The point of view is from the CIC so your displays mirror this. Find out about the seiries at Advanced Gamings Systems Inc and the links in my sig.

I have played & still play Destroyer Command & Janes Fleet Command.
Destroyer Command is pretty nice, so is JFC but with a little more efort it would have been a realy great game instead of only medium.
Also I have heard that Harpoon III/IV is suppost to be pretty good

I play a few, mostly sub sims, I love Silent Hunter 1 (American’s sinking Imperial Japanese fleet). I have Silent Hunter II but it’s not as good in my books, I also have Jane’s 688i Hunter Killer, that’s good especially Launching TLAM attacks on Lybia 😉
