It looks like anything that goes by the name John McCain is a disaster for the American tax payers.

Hi folks. Just wanted to let you know where I stand on Canada’s Future Naval Fleet. This plan is expensive, and even “Jaw Dropping”, but is really do-able over the next 25-30 years….. if Canada has the boldness to do so.

“FUTURE CANADIAN NAVAL FLEET”
(B=1 Billion dollars):
12 X Type 216 SSK’S-“ Aboriginal Class” (6 Per Coast) (1)—————————$20B
15 X BAE TYPE 26 FRIGATES-“ Canada Class” (8 East/7 West) (2)——————$60B
2 X QUEENSTON CLASS AOR’S (1 East/1West)—————————————-$4.2B
2 X RESOLVE CLASS INTERIM AOR’S (1 Per Coast)———————————–$1.8B
3 X JUAN CARLOS SEA-LIFT LHD’s –“Majestic Class”(2 East/1 West) (3)————-$4B
2 X TRIESTE CLASS SEA-LIFT LHA’s-“Magnificent Class” (1 Per Coast) (3)———–$4B
8 X ARTIC OFF-SHORE PATROL SHIPS-“Harry DeWolf Class” (4 Per Coast)———$6.4B

Total costs would be estimated at around $100B for this new Fleet over the next 25-30 yrs.

1. The German Type 216 SSK is a 4,300 ton submerged submarine, with double hulls giving it similar capabilities to a Nuclear Submarine and able to remain under water for weeks IOT reach crisis areas. At the heart of this boat is a propulsion system that employs a methanol reformer Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system to achieve a submerged range without snorkeling for 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 km) at four knots, assisted by lithium ion batteries as a supplementary energy source. This range is ideal to deploy in Canada’s North. Like an SSN, it has the ability, to launch Cruise Missiles, to deploy Special Forces with under-water delivery vehicles and un-manned under-water vehicles. Snorkeling under diesel electric power at 10 knots adds a further 10,400 nautical miles (19,260 km). Overall endurance is about 80 days during which, a submerged AIP period could, if required, exceed more than 20 days. The Class is designed to be extremely quiet due to it’s propulsion system and, uses a sound absorbing coating on the hull. While a 33-strong crew would be sufficient to man and operate the Type 216, 60 bunks are provided to meet the Navy’s requirements (Special Forces). A gym area can be included for crew well-being. More submariners would need to be recruited as well. A $20 billion contract to Thyssen-Krupp will deliver 12 Type 216-based submarines to be built in Canada, Germany or a mix of both. The Type 216 is a “game-changer” for Canada’s future National Defense. Nuclear Submarines are ideal for our Northern Defense, but politically a non-starter.

2. The BAE Type 26 Frigate is simply the best fit for Canada’s Future work-horse Navy. This ship exceeds Canada’s high-level requirements, and will be deployable worldwide for extended periods. The ship is 149.9 metres in length and has a maximum beam of 20.8 metres and a displacement of over 6,900 tons. It has a MK 41 VLS system that can accommodate Tomahawks/ASROC’s & LRASM’s. It has a 5” 62 calibre Mk. 45 Main Gun along with 2 X 30mm, 2 X CIWS & 2 X Mini-Gun Systems. It’s large Flight Deck can easily accommodate our CH 148 Cyclone helicopter with hanger facilities for UAV’s along with a flexible Mission Bay. It can undertake a wide range of roles from high intensity conflicts to humanitarian assistance, including Anti-Submarine Warfare and Area Air Defense. The Type 26 is flexible, versatile and highly survivable with an extremely low acoustic signature. It exceeds all Canadian Naval requirements, and accommodates Canada-Specific modular design sub-systems with open systems architecture. These same features will minimize ownership costs and facilitate Canadian industry playing a major role in through-life support and upgrades, delivering long term economic benefits to Canada. It’s low acoustic signature, crucial in evading detection from submarines, will translate into safety and survivability of the crew, and the ability of the ship to successfully complete its mission. Accommodation is included for 208 crew, with a core complement of 118. No other ship design compares to meet Canadian Naval requirements, including the French FREMM Class and the German Type 125/MKS 180. The Type 26 Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) is the simply right solution for Canada, and of course would be built in Canada.

3. The Spanish Juan Carlos Class LHD has four decks, a dock and garage for heavy cargo, a habitability deck, a hangar and light cargo garage and a flight deck with a 12° sky-jump. This LHD runs on a combined diesel-electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion system. The electric engines are powered by one gas turbine and two diesel generators. Two POD-type propellers of 11MW each support the system with a maximum sustained speed of 21kts.The ship is equipped with four 20mm guns and four 12.7mm machine guns but other armament’s could be added if required. This LHD is a multipurpose vessel that can be used as an aircraft carrier as well as amphibious warfare and relief operations. The Austrailian Navy have already acquired 2 Juan Carlos Class LHD’s, and are now operational in their Navy. The Turkish Navy have also bought this LHD and is now under construction.
The first of the Italian Trieste Class LHA’s was laid down in July of 2017 and is expected to be commissioned in 2022. The Indian Navy is also contemplating acquiring this LHA. This class has similar characteristics to the Juan Carlos Class, but able to carry more aircraft and has better armaments with a top speed of 25+ kts. Both Classes can carry, as a minimum, at least one full Canadian Army Regiment strength with the Trieste Class able to carry close to one Canadian Battalion strength, if required, and both have exceptional Command and Control capabilities. Both Classes are fitted with up to 4 x LCM’s with room for up to 46 Leopard II Tanks per ship. They both can carry updated LAV lll’s along with all support vehicles. Each carries a minimum of 10-12 Chinook Heavy Lift Helicopters and/or up to 15 Attack/Reccon Helos with up to 24 VSTOL Aircraft (8A Harrier/F35B), with a significant UAV capability. They have substantial Triage Hospitals with room for up to 30-40 patients along with X-Ray and Dental facilities and Pilots briefing rooms. A significant Disaster Relief & Humanitarian Capability with the ability to carry up to 144 large containers. Both of these ships will give Canada the potent Sealift Capability we have been sorely missing and could be built in Canada with contracts awarded to the best bidding shipyard. Canada however, must have enough Naval/Air Force Personnal to man these ships. Recruitment of more Sailors/Airmen into the Navy/Air Force, possibly bringing up Naval/Air Force Strength by at least 4000. Hopefully, the Canadian Government will learn from the experiences of its southern hemisphere allies and recognize the utility of dedicated, multi-role amphibious warships such as these, and the innovative missions they could enable us to take on, amid a changing geostagetic environment.
