A Navigator is not a pilot, he/she is most often seen in transport aircraft only. A Weapons Systems Operator (WSO) is a fully qualified pilot trained to fly that aircraft if necessary.
I want to know how world airforces that operate multi-role strike aircraft like F-15E and Su-30s decide their crews. Can a navigator take the role of the WSO?
I remember reading here that in the first operation by IDF/AF in which a female officer saw action was when an F-16 PGM’d a Hamas target. The poster used the word ‘navigator’.
The closest an IAF navigator got close to action was in Canberra aircraft, which is why a Canberra sqn is/was the most coveted opening for them. More recently, the IAF initially experimented with putting a Navigator in the rear seat of the Su-30, but AFAIK this did not work out.
