Apologies if this has been discussed before in the dim and distant past.
Came in from walking the mutt on Tuesday night to find the missus indulging in one of her favourite pastimes, ie watching cr*p TV.
Telly programme was called “Most Haunted” and the subject matter the NEAM at Sunderland.
Part of the programme featured their Sea Venom XG680 which according to the presenters / investigators started “vibrating like mad for no apparent reason” as they all stood around with their hands on it.
I will freely admit that I am sceptical about the content of programmes like this so, can any reputable forum members confirm / deny these ocurrences, and if so, does the history of this airframe support such claims – accidents etc.
Ta.

Just watched a recording of the programme last night.
Not very impressed. The Whirlwind was said to have rescued survivors from the Sir Galahad during the Falklands War. Pretty impossible as it was retired long before the war started.
The story of Augustin Preucil is well documented and was featured at length in Aeroplane Monthly.
The details concerning the loss of Sgt Shaw are well documented at the museum.
As for hangar one being haunted I presonally spent many hours in this building during nearly twenty years of involvement with the museum. Yes it is true bits and pieces fall from the roof. But this is not surprising as there is much up there for the birds to knock off.
It may have been good television for those who do not know the museum. However I think some of the research was clearly flawed. Call me a sceptic but I never had any paranormal experiences.
The only stories I ever heard of any haunting always surrounded the Lamellar hangar on the old airfield site. These involved a former Canadian pilot, a sergeant if I remember, who was reputed to have crashed on the airfield. However my records from the ORB’s for the units that flew from Usworth have failed to support this loss.
Incidentally although there were no operational losses from Usworth there were 36 pilots who lost their life to accidents during training.

That’s the one! I knew it was something like that. I’ve found when looking at things like this and oter “paranormal” activities such as UFO’s and the like you can often get to the bottom of it this way! 😀
Talking of UFOs. I was skydiving at Headcorn and was going a solo jump and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a shimmering disk. (with imagination in overdrive) I thought WTF…….. Oh……. It’s a helicopter. I’ve never seen one from above before. A few weeks later whilst mindlessly surfing I found the iloveufos.com or whatever it was called and I told them about the story but I just forgot to tell them about the helicopter dangling under the disk. We had a lot of very strange people camping in the fields for a while after that. :diablo: :diablo:

I was mindlessly surfing the web the other day and came across this website about Electronic Voice Phenomena. Think I might give it a go. Got a camcorder and an old TV.
Ali 🙂
Go for it 😉

That’s classic “making it fit” behaviour; part of how cold reading works. It’s good that you were able to spot it. Bloody frauds.

Gremlins having a bit of fun perhaps?

Presumably that means that the crowd lines at places like Old Warden or the tank bank at a certain airfield will one day be crammed full of ghostly figures toting sphectural Canon digicams????
A terrifying thought – and they wouldn’t be paying!Paul F (Now where’s that Razor I borrowed from Mr. Occam)
P.S. Actually the guy’s name was William – Occam ( Or Ockham) was where he lived.

Some ghost do haunt the place where they died, some Haunt the place that was special to them.

surely those who have an interest here say that ghosts haunt the place they died in.
Some ghost do haunt the place where they died, some Haunt the place that was special to them. For Example the RN Whirlwind helo survivor who was rescued by the chopper could have died if it was not for the chopper and when he did die his ghost went back to that chopper.

infra sound being vibrations that are beyond the human ear’s hearing range but which can still make wine glasses sing, floorboards buzz and windows rattle.
Very Interesting Ant – Thanks for the reply. Just shows that if you look far enough there are normally more contributing factors than a one off “sensational event”. I don’t dismiss out of hand the fact that supernatural phenomena can occur, I just think that a lot of the time you need to do more than just scrath the surface.

The psychic said the haunted chopper was the pilot and when he was asked for the name of the pilot he suddently changed his story to a survivor who was rescued by the chopper.

You are referring to the priciple of Occam’s Razor – it usually works.

Sticking my neck out here and stating no in depth interest in ghosts – surely those who have an interest here say that ghosts haunt the place they died in. So I would argue it to be unlikely the Whirlwind would be haunted by a survivor! I think in these cases it can all be summed up by whoever said that the most mundane and obvious explanation is usually the truth!

NEAM itself is not haunted. There have been several stories relating to the pub nearby which has experienced all manner of glasses and things shooting off shelves and flying to the floor. A bit of research found that an airman had been killed there (it was the officers mess) and it was suggested that his ghost was the culprit. I do know that everything was spiritless until regular ghost watches came and started doing their stuff at NEAM then all manner of things were discovered (apparantley!). Quite why the Whirlwind should be haunted I don’t know. I’m always wary of things like this where people place their hands on things and then strange things happen – there always seems to be an obvious reason that is often overlooked. Mind I touched the JP there once and it started rolling once I let go and if someone hadn’t stopped it …….
Yeah it is belive me its haunted all right 😉 the thing that scared the **** out of me was the RN Whirlwind helo and Ali I went on one off these ghost watches at NEAM when on hoilday in NY very good it was.I am a big most haunted fan and they dont use anything to make things move or make a sound I been on one off there shows I ve seen orbs shadows and ghostly figers etc. Ghost are out there but we dont see them.

I know the wheels were not overly loose on the Vampire…. Probably could have been useful to help moving some of the aircraft around in the past!!
I couldn’t even push a motorbike easily. 😀

Evidence? For any of these “hauntings”? And no, “I thought something moved” or “I felt weird” do not count as evidence. Unless you had a dodgy curry the night before, in which case it’s evidence you should get to the nearest khazi.

First thing I did when the Vampire started moving was pull my torch out and shine it underneath. There wasn’t anyone there. Didn’t see any apparitions or anything like that but the aircraft definately moved a couple of feet. I’m really small and light and I dont’ think by leaning against the wing would have moved it at all. I’m sure there is a logical explanation and I still have my sceptics hat on but it definately moved.
