I am looking for a scan of any photo of the Short Sandringham 5 flying boat named “Portland”, which was operated by BOAC.
I have checked the A.J. Jackson photo collection held by the Brookings Museum, and they don’t have one.

‘Portland’/G-AHZB was a Short S25 Sandringham “Plymouth” Class Flying Boat.
Originally built by Blackburn’s at Dumbarton as Sunderland NJ171 in May 1944 and delivered to 228 Sqn RAF as UE-A on 22.6.44, it was converted to a Plymouth class Sandringham 5 at Short’s, Belfast (SH.38C) and delivered to BOAC on 6.5.46 as Portland/G-AHZB. It crashed at Bahrein 23.8.47 due to a heavy water landing.
Here are two photos of ‘Portland’ and a drawing showing the layout of the Plymouth class series.

PM me for higher resolution copies available if required.

Hi Phil – and welcome.
G-AHZB “Portland”
Sorry about the crease in the corner. I’m sure I’ve seen another photo of her from a different angle but can’t put my hand on it right now.

And crashed in 1947.

Hello Phil, welcome to the Forum and good luck with your quest! Was unable to locate a photo, but am guessing it might be G-AGJO (ML756). Other possibilities might be ‘HYY, ‘HZF, ‘HZC, ‘JMZ, ‘HZD or ‘KCO.
