Need help identifying early aircraft

I’m a writer working on a short story set in the American midwest in the summer of 1914. The main character is an amateur pilot with no connection to the military. My question is, what airplane would he likely be flying? It must be a two-seater and a landplane. Any links to good photos and specifications would be helpful too. Thanks!

A Jenny would have been a bit too new and expensive.

A Curtiss pusher would have been more common.

If he is mechanically minded, you could say he engineered some minor changes to it, as they were common in the unregulated days.

If he was a student of the Wright organization, his ship would of had Wright-type controls, very different from other, more common arrangements.

Here’s a list of Wright products with photos to help you describe them.

Author 23 – for 1914 he would most likely have had to build his own airplane or purchase (say) a Curtiss Model D (pusher)  or perhaps a Wright Model C or Model F.
