Nellis AFB Threat Training Facility

I finally found the time to put together a page about the Nellis Threat Training Facility, which I visited during the 2004 Nellis Air Show.

This is a research and training center which has a $70 million collection of enemy, mostly Soviet, equipment, which has been flight tested and analyzed for the strengths and weaknesses of each item – aircraft, anti-aircraft systems and tanks.

No problem Richard.

Those things next to the MiG-29 are the centerline external fuel tank, and the top half of an R-27R missile (or AA-10 ALAMO-A as it will probably called at the TTF).

Arthur, thanks for that info. Despite my use of the term “armaments”, I did assume that the large item was a fuel tank, but I know next to nothing about weapon systems, so I had no idea what the missile was.

Interesting stuff Richard. One correction though: that MiG-23 is a MiG-23ML FLOGGER-G, not an -MLD FLOGGER-K. The kink in the wingroot which shows so clearly on your picture is actually the dogtooth of the variable wing panel. The MLD’s leading edge kink is far closer to the fuselage, where the TTF Flogger has a straight leading edge.

Arthur,

Thanks, I was hoping someone would be able to pick up on any inaccuracies in the article – though of course I was hoping even more that I hadn’t screwed up any of the facts 😉 !

Anyway, I’ve fixed the page up already, because I’d hate to lead astray any of the impressionable!

By the way, can anyone tell me what armaments those are beside the MiG 29?

Richard.
