Nevil Shute – news on enthusiast's event

In case you are interested, a gathering of Shutists will be happening in July 2009 in York. In the late 1920s/early 1930s, before Nevil Norway became a successful author (and replaced his surname with his middle name of ‘Shute’) he worked with Sir Barnes Wallis on the R100 at Howden. He then co-founded Airspeed Ltd in York with Hessell Tiltman, with the patronage of Lord Grimthorpe and Sir Alan Cobham.

These years are being re-visted in a conference put on by not-for-profit appreciation society, the Nevil Shute Foundation. Should be some interesting speakers. More info on http://www.uk2009.info/

I don’t know about other Forumites of my age – but “Round The Bend” was one of the most important books I ever read.
If I remember it correctly “RTB” said that regardless of one’s individual religious beliefs the fact – for example – of absolutely correctly doing up a locking-wire on an a/c servicing was the equivalent of a religious action. This requires some intellectual effort! – but I knew what he meant!
I was only obliquely involved in airframes (at least in the early part of my career) as a meteorologist.
I did a lot of flying later. I hoped that “they” had done the locking-wires up properly. They must have done! I’m still here to drone on about it in my mid-70’s.
