New addition due at Hendon? Chipmunk moving?

As I was passing by I called in at Hendon, mainly to see the new WW1 exhibition. It seems the Chipmunk has been removed from the main hall to the Bomber command hall. In fact it was next to the exit. The floor of its former position was being repainted. Is it going to be replaced, anybody know? Staff were more preoccupied with teenagers running around and didn’t seem to know.

Richard Willshire owns WP833 (the other “around the world” Chipmunk), based at Chino in California.

Isn’t the RAFM example one of those that did the (abandoned) Round the World Flight attempt? hence the GPS

Edit – just checked and it was, had forgotten they had made it at a second attempt.

Belongs to MOD/RAF

5 May 00 By road from RAF Newton ( where it had been dismantled for transport
two days earlier) to RAFM Hendon on initial three year loan from the
RAF/MoD. Dummy GPS equipment now fitted. Photo on display; Flypast
February 2001 p.20.

OK, thanks.

Why does a Chipmunk need GPS? Can’t they just lean out and ask someone?

The Hendon Chipmunk is not owned by Richard Wilsher – he helped with information for the historical narrative.

So who does own it?

I wonder if they will get a Sea King for Hendon or Cosford, with the type’s imminent retirement looming

That makes sense, the RAFM website shows it owned by Richard Wilsher.

I believe it was on something like a 10-year loan from the owner. Perhaps it has now come to the end of its loan period?
