Today it poured. But MAM took delivery of a new exhibit all the way from Kent. A Mi-24 Hind in BAe Systems colours arrived this afternoon and was off-loaded in short order. Weighs in (dry and minus rotors) at 8.75 tons! (A Canberra (dry) only weighs 6 tons).
Am I right in thinking this is the only Hind in a UK museum? I know Peter Junior’s got one at Flugausstellung Junior – near Hermeskeil, Germany.
Interesting airframe? Yes! Ugly? Oh yes.

I think there are a few companies in the market to refurbish Hinds -I guess there isn’t work for all of them!
And the fact that it was BAe touting for business with this one at Farnborough in 2004 upset Mil, it seems…

Apart from the fact that they are fairly easily to obtain from a multitude of sources – would it really matter if the Duxford Hind was in a poor state or not even there at all! With an example undercover at the Helicopter museum that pretty much gives us enough of the type for the long term. I would start preserving further examples of the Wessex 60 series and Puma’s and Chinooks
when they start becoming available.

It used to be there, but it’s now in Hangar 3 between the Wessex and Avro York
and it’s in a scruffy state unless they’ve cleaned it up since Legends

Because BAE SYSTEMS were going to upgrade the electronics and so forth and help market it as a replacement for the original models.
Does this mean that BAES have given up on the idea of competing with Mil to refurbish Hinds?

Duxford have an ex-German one – but it’s not as pretty as that one!

Compared to both the MAM and HM examples the Duxford one is in a disgraceful condition. Always been a fan of the “Devils Chariot” and I think the one at Duxford deserves to be given a clean up.

I guess this is the example that was on BAe’s static display stand at Farnborough 2004?
