New Assistant Curator at East Fortune

I hope nobody minds me making a post like this, but I thought I’d let you all know that a new Assistant Curator of Aviation has been appointed by the National Museums of Scotland, namely me!

I hope to start my new job next week and you are all more than welcome to come and see me, the collections and, of course, Concorde. And for those of you who made it to the forum meet-up there last year, I’ll be doing my utmost to sort all the criticisms I made of the place!

Yes you do! – The Harrier (not hanger) T2/T4 at Sandy’s Mill.

Ian,

Please excuse my stupidity. I have heard about the T2 but have not, of course, seen it or any photos of it and would be very interested to see it. Thanks very much indeed for your kind offer. May I take a rain check just now until I get an idea for how busy I’m going to be. The next couple of months could be kind of hectic in order to get the Concorde exhibition ready for March. After then, I may have a little more time.

Congratulations Ian!

(Does this mean that I can badger you to let me (carefully) take measurements from the Harrier?!)

……..and if you ever have a spare moment you are welcome to visit the
T2 just across the road from you.

Best regards,

Ian Sheffield

I must confess that you’ve lost me here. Another T2 hangar in the area? Where? Where did it originate from? I don’t see any problems with you measuring the Harrier. Give me an email in a week or two at i.brownATnms.ac.uk (changing the AT, obviously).

Does this still leave you time for your Radar archive work, and the forthcoming book? 🙂

You can bet it will, one way or the other! 😉

Thanks, and thanks for the tip Adam. I tried rabbit when I was in Malta (excellent aviation museum, by the way) a couple of years ago and it was rather nice, so any that don’t get completely flattened might just go in the back of the car!

Many congratulations Ian, you will be a great asset and getting such a dedicated “aviation person” in place is a great step forward for the Museum of Flight.

Mind out for the rabbits as you enter and leave. I eventually found the best way to avoid hitting one was to aim straight at them.

Thanks guys and gals for your support. I expect to see you all there sometime this year – no excuses!

In all seriousness, I hope to help make major changes to the way the collections are looked after and really develop the museum. I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve already. 😉

MOTF: Good point, well taken. Setter did make some very good points in that thread and I intend making sure that long term plans are drawn up and implemented. As a national museum, it is nothing less than our duty. It is already intended that a master plan for the MoF should be completed by the end of the year and this should hopefully address such issues. As regards the volunteers of the APSS, I’ve already been in touch with my contacts there and, I hope, building bridges.

Steve: I don’t yet know exactly what is happening, but I’ve heard strong rumours that work on the Beaufighter will be starting this year. If I have anything to do with it, that will certainly be the case. Whether it does or not, I’ll certainly get you access if you give me a shout nearer the time.

Nah, not towing… installing! 😀 I wonder whether I can squeeze a Herc into the MG. If I’m going to get nailed by speed cameras I might as well do it properly… 😉

Very well done Ian! Good luck in the new role, I wish you every success. It’s looking like I’ll be in Edinburgh in June, so I might just have to drop in. Any chance of a quick nose at the Beau…? 😉

A quick nose? More like “d’ya mind if I assess the towing ability of my car using the Beau?”

Thief! 😀

Congratulations Ian

If we on the forum can help then you know where we are.

Casting my mind back to the “discussion” you had with Setter ref Concord earlier this year, if I casn give you one bit of advice it would be to go back and re-read what he said and bear it in mind in your new position. He’s a good bloke who cares passionately about historic aviation. He may not be right all the time but he’s worth listening to.

Anyway as I said, great news. Just remember to sit back and enjoy it!
