Some of you may recall my appeal for information about two B-17 crews from the 388th Bomb Group based at Knettishall.
Here’s the story so far. In May 2014 I found a wine cooler in an Edinburgh antiques shop engraved with ‘Outstanding Crew of the Month – 388th Bombardment Group’. On the rear were the names of two B-17 crews for August 1944 and September 1944. How it came to be there after 70 years was a mystery that invited further investigation. I was even more surprised to find a photo of one of the crews holding the trophy. I started looking for the names and a friend told me that the story was too good to let slip away – I had to write a book about it. So, after hundreds of hours researching, phoning the USA, travelling and emailing, this book is the result.

Finding the relatives of the crews, and indeed two living members, has been a fantastic journey for me. The book tells their story, where they came from, where they trained, and looks at their missions in a key period of WW2. Both crews started their combat missions on or about D-Day and it’s been a privilege to turn up unpublished accounts of that time, unseen photos and stories of events which hovered on the verge of being unheard. I’ve made a lot of new friends and gained an appreciation of the B-17 and the crews that flew them.
The book is published on 30th June in the UK and is available for pre-order now on Amazon UK and Pen & Sword books website. Just search for ‘A Bomber Crew Mystery’ to find stockists. I’d be delighted to share more on this forum and answer readers questions once the book is in circulation.
