New Belfast City Airport Spotting Platform

Given IKEA is more relaxed in terms of visitor numbers I thought it wise to let you know about a new spotting location at the new IKEA store. I have already shown Dan (wannabepilot) it before it opened to the public.

The 3rd floor of the Multistorey has panoramic unobstructed views over the runway (the multi storey is close to the 22 threshold) and stands closest to IKEA. If it is raining the 2nd floor has just as good mainly unobstructed views over the runway (you just have to dodge lampposts).

Inside IKEA has a Restaurant overlooking the RWY22 threshold and Q1 or 2 next year a McDonalds and Starbucks is being built beside IKEA.

It is about a 15 minute walk from Belfast City Airport terminal which once final construction of the surrounding retail site is finished, should be less than 5 minutes from the terminal!

I am sure Dan could perhaps give his views/photos?

It would be a good idea to at least purchase something in the restaurant. The Harbour Police and PSNI both do have powers to move you on from the area as its private property to which the public have a right of way. You should see regular PSNI and Harbour Patrols in vehicles around the site to deter crime.

If you purchased something in the restaurant (its cheap!) then we would not move you on as your a customer.

Hi.

I’m thinking of going spotting at Ikea in the next few days and I was wondering if the staff care much about it? Slightly worried they will tell me to move on, although if the car park is empty I can’t see there being any problem? I guess since it’s on private ground the police don’t have any jurisdiction to ask you what you’re doing like they do if you’re spotting on the bridge or whatever?

I’ve been down to Ikea a few times already (not to spot) and that car park loads an amazing place to spot from. The restaurant would be an excellent place to sit all day and watch the planes from aswell.

Yes, it is an excellent place. I would put it as one of the best around! I posted some pics the other day from it on the airline images section 😉 .

Was that you with the dark coloured coat with the hood up taking photos? I have been keeping an eye out for spotters as our company does Security / Crowd Control / Traffic Management for IKEA Belfast so i have been there alot recently.
