I was reading on another site tonight (AVI8.com) that someone is currently working on a book about Great Escaper Roger Bushell . Does anyone have any additional information that can be added here. This is one man who I would enjoy reading more about, a very brave and complex man indeed. A very outstanding lawyer before the war…also what type of aircraft was he flying when he was shot down early in war. I have read he was in a Hurricane and a Spitfire….what type..fighter or bomber ?
Thanks !

Roger Bushell biography
My name is Jennifer Schwartz, and I’m currently writing a full-length book biography of Roger Bushell. Unfortunately, many facts written about Roger have been incorrect, including the aircraft in which he was downed. He was flying a Spitfire Mark I N3194 on the second sortie of the day on 23 May 1940. Most unfortunately, Roger’s first day of air combat was his last.

I was invited to the Time Team dig.
Strangely Bushell’s maps, marked with his name, were found in wreck of Klipsch’s Spitfire.
This begs the question had Bushell loaned his maps, or even his regular Spitfire, to Klipsch on that day.

May 23rd 1940 Sqd Ldr Bushell was flying 92 Sqn Spitfire Mk1 N3194, though several publications claim it was a Hurricane, this is due in the main to an error made by J Vance in his book, A Gallant Company.
Bushell was shot down in the same sortie as Sgt Paul Klipsch, whose Spitfire was the subject of the excavation by the Time Team programme in France in 1999/2000.
Prior to this Bushell had acted as defence counsel for two pilots John Freeborn and Paddy Bryne who were involved in the ‘Battle of Barking Creek’ court martial. He won and they were acquitted.

I believe there is a chapter on him in the 601 sqdn history ‘The Flying Sword’
