New built Hampdens

As the drawings are available as well as the general simplicity of the airframe would it not be feasible to built a batch of Handley Page Hampdens from scratch?

Provided the funding is no problem, could it be done (or a Whitley)?

Papa Lima,

You really did the GRAND tour! Nice photo’s.There was a proposal for a new site for the museum in Langley. I hope it goes through, I hate to see the Hampden out in the rainey weather 6 months out of the year.

Cheers,

Todd

P.S – I haven’t made it out to Hooters to see if your photo is on the wall. I will soon. I’ll give my regards to all the nice ladies for you. 🙂

Sounds similar to the proposal to new-build a static Whirlwind that was running on a WIX board some time ago. Apparently that proposal never went any further because one of the driving forces had to drop out. I gather they were having a lot of trouble being able to accurately obtain fuselage dimensions. I suppose a Whitley or Hampden might be even more difficult because they are bigger aircraft but at least there are substantial Hampden remains to help the process.

Hi Elliott,

I thought maybe he had. I tried to email you awhile back. He had an oil tank from my Uncles Whitley wreckage. I heard it was for sale at an Aerojumble over your way. Did you come across it by any chance? I can’t think of a better place for it to go. It’s a good thing I came over when I did last year…

Nice to hear from you!

There are drawings for the Whitley, but not a complete set – I doubt there is a complete set for the Hampden either. This is the reason so much emphasis is placed on recoveries and reverse engineering. To build a batch of airworthy Whitley’s would be a very difficult job – many of the systems parts are vitually unobtainable and we have hoovered most of the available ones up. It would be great though, of course!

Todd – did you hear that Mr Reynolds had died? Very sad news.

Cees,

They’ve done a pretty bang up job on the Hampden here in British Columbia. Considering it was an absolute wreck after they pulled it from Patricia Bay. I had a good look at the airframe not to long ago and it looked fairly straight forward. The Whitley on the otherhand…There’s a question for Elliott! Are there complete drawings for the Whitley????

Cheers,

Todd
