The RAT-52, rocket powered torpedo was dropped from modified Tu-16s. In fact one was dropped at the wrong angle and exited the water again and flew to a height of 500m for a range of over 3km. (The RAT-52 entered service in 1952 BTW).

That’s actually pretty damn funny if you think about it.

I wasn’t aware the Shkval was dropped from aircraft. And it’s not like nobody had ever heard of supercavitation before that either. But then it’s not like you have a penchant for facts.

The design builds on the Navy’s work on high-speed torpedoes that reduce friction by creating a gas bubble called a supercavity.

An idea they pinched off the Shkval torpedo and other Russian and Soviet torpedos since the RAT-52.
