I’m after a bit of advice if poss…. I am considering upgrading my camera, I currently have a Fuji S5000 with a number of memory cards which I have been very pleased with for the last 18 months and takes some bloody good pics on a good day, however I also have a Canon EOS500 with a Canon EF 35-80 lens and a Canon 75-300 lens.
So my choices as I see them today are Fuji S9600 or Canon EOS350D/400D. The Fuji advantage is that I have the memory cards, the Canon that I have the lenses.
I also dont want it to be too big as it needs to be small enough to be thrown in an aeroplane when the opportunity arises.
I pretty much only take pics for my records these days as I am never going to be as talented as some on here (I can post if anyone is interested).
What do you reckon?

In theory my mailbox should be free now, I was caught out by the reduction in the number of PM’s you can now have.
Thanks for all the advice.

Would have to say go for the Canon 400D.
Memory cards as been said are very cheap today and falling in price all the time. 7Day shop seems a very good place to buy such things as cards and Batteries etc.
The 400D should give as much service as your trusty old 500E as done for many years. Even if 2 years down the line with 20million pixels on tap . a good 6mp camera will still be plenty good enough for most needs and prints up too A3 size.

Hi Y11f
Had exactly the same dilemna myself, and I opted for the Canon EOS350D route (and my teenage son then gladly grabbed the S5000 and memory cards). As has been said, even very large and very fast CF cards are still cheaper than lenses – though having looked around, SLR lenses seem to have dropped in price since I last looked at them a few years ago.
Only had my new 350D a couple of weeks, so it’s not really fair to compare it to the S5000 yet, but my first ham-fisted attempts are Okay, though photo colours do not seem quite so vibrant as those taken on the Fuji, and images are not quite as pin-sharp either, I probably need time to work out how to get optimal results from the many user setting options available on the Canon, and sharpness may well be down to the lenses I’m using.
Canon EF-type lenses do indeed work with the EOS 350D/400D bodies, and you get the bonus of a 1.6x increase in focal length due to the way the digital sensor works, which might be useful for air to ground shots, as the 300mm lens will now give an effective length equivalent to a 450mm lens on a 35mm-film body, but you do nee dto check if it’s a Canon EF-type lens, older Canon lenses may not be fully compatible with the digi-bodies. Of course, the downside of the focal length multiplcation effect is that any indoor work now needs a very “short” lens, as your 35 – 80mm zoom will act like a 48 – 120 mm lens. Thus, you will probably want to get the EOS350D/400D with one of the new 18-55mm zoom lenses, which in effect gives same results as a 24 – 80mm lens on an old 35mm-film body.
Pls check your PM’s – I sent some info to another forumite on this thread on Monday which you may find useful, so I will copy it to you.

I think your photos are excellent, If you took them with the Fuji I would go for the 9600, I am thinking of dumping my 602 in favour of it, simply because it is basically an upgrade of a well proven model.

go with the Canon, – memory cards are very cheap now : – look at
They were going for about £12.99 each for a 1gb CF card last time I looked
I have a 20D and use it in RAW mode and I am very pleased with the results. I can only imagine that Canons latest models will be better
Good Luck!

I’m with Ian on this.
If you’ve already got Canon lenses, then it seems sensible to go with the Canon body.
Just make sure that both of your lenses are compatible with the auto-focus system, though. The EF lens should be OK, but I’d check out the 75-300 just to be on the safe side. 🙂

Memory cards are cheaper to replace than lenses, I’d go with the Canon 400D.
