New DUB runway announced 12/04/06

From the Evening Echo –

Fingal gives green light to new runway at Dublin Airport

12/04/2006 – 19:09:53

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has welcomed a decision by Fingal County Council to grant permission for the construction of a new east-west runway.

The new runway will be built 1.6km to the north of the airport and parallel to the existing main runway.

DAA will take time to assess the specifics of this decision in greater detail.

“Based on the most recent traffic forecasts, the new parallel runway needs to be operational within the next six to seven years to ensure the airfield at Dublin Airport continues to operate effectively and airline operations are not subjected to growing delays on arrival and departure,” A DAA spokesperson said.

Interesting move for DUB. Several questions come to mind – Will Ryanair’s wish to have their own dedicated loco terminal now become part of the masterplan around the new runway implementation? Bearing in mind recent operational problems in DUB (long tailbacks in the terminal last summer for example), is there confidence in the DAA to successfully oversee such a change in the airport’s operation? And most importantly of all – will there be a proper tiered viewing spot (complete with some shelter, toilets and salmonella burger stand) alongside the touchdown point of the new runway ??? 🙂 😉

737 size. LOL no its going to be longer than the excisting one and wllt hen have 28L/R and 10L/R.

I dount FR will ever get their own low cost terminal.
Pier D is well underway and is expected to open next month. Its only temporary prefabs but it will ease some of the congestion in June/July and August.

The new runway will replace the current RWY29 which is used turboprops and ocasionally 146s. It’ll be 3110 metres or about 500m longer than the current main RWY28. Yep, handy for the A pier as it’ll more than likely be used for departures.

The planning permisssion is still subject to appeal and this country is completely illogical when its comes to planning so who knows 🙁

I assume this is the proposed 26R? If so i think it is to keep FR etc happy as it will mean short taxi for them as Alpha Pier is closest to proposed siting.

I doubt there’ll be a viewing deck here in dublin, the DAA seem to be anti-spotter at the monent(look at the new fence in front of the rwy 28 entrance),as for the second runway,i think it will only be able for up to 737 size.Might see a LHR style system in place?,posses a bit of a dilemma about where to go,i don’t fancy cycling around to catch different arrivals/departures.
