New Duxford Display Axis

As announced by our friends at BBC Look East, with the usual crash scene shots, this lunchtime.

Dislpay axis moved 250m to the west towards the AAM to increase the distance from the M11.

Live interview with Ted Inman followed, but questions so banal couldn’t get that interested. 😮

Doesn’t sound a particularly briliant idea to me either.

If you follow the attached link on the Fly Vintage site, you can see the plans used in the enquiry for the route of the M11.

You can also have a look at the line of 1970’s air displays.

Those links haven’t worked for sometime – they just return you to the homepage – I believe Chris Cage had provided the maps (anyone know him?) – I did see them and the difference route B made would have left the runway intact. Shame…

BTW – I have heard a rumour that the Dept of Transport is now considering installing traffic lights on the M11 which will operate when an aircraft is coming into land at Duxford.

PS – I hope that SAA 747 does a Vulcan Climbout right over Whinging Greer’s house!:p

I’ve been reading this for a few days now, hoping that someone would give some kind of definitive answer to my question:

This microlight and crane formation. One microlight, and ‘x’ cranes. Now, is said crane a man made flying machine or actually a bird? Bird being a living breathing thing with a mind of it’s own and a tendency not to understand about whirring props and the damage they can cause to said birds?

If it’s the former, phew! Although I have to say I’ve never heard of an aeroplane called a crane.

If it’s the latter however.. F***!!! 😮

Now maybe I’m being thicker than a whale omelette, but isn’t it just a teeny bit silly, Duxford intentionally allowing a bunch of independently minded feathered things to charge around the sky on a show day? It’s not as if they read bloody NOTAMs is it?

Or is my beer particularly strong tonight and I’ve got the wrong end of the stick. (Please say yes.)

I’m worried.

Back in ’76/77 when I was a DAS member and volunteer worker on the non-flying B-17, we petitioned against the M11’s location and the effect it would have on the runway length.

The motorway got built as planned anyway, so it could be argued that it’s the Dept. of Transport’s fault that the situation of today has come about….

Anyhoo, did anyone catch last night’s ‘Look East’? Lotsa stuff about how wonderful this weekend’s show will be, what with the microlight/goose combination, and the 747, plus some Danish guy with a replica Wright Flyer – so are the Beeb undergoing a reversal of sympathies, and leaving Duxford alone for a while, or was it just a slow news day???

The reason for the extra pan is that we have alot of extra aircraft this weekend. The Props will be on the grass as always, Jets on the new pan (just in place for this airshow) and the Wright flyer and other associated debris will be on the old jet pan.

the reason for the dispersal at the eastern end is due to increased jet operations from ARC and is only temporary and disapears on airshows to make room for the P51 spotters.:p

True

There are plenty of airfields with major roads running past there thresholds, I understand the problems that are faced by both camps yet (touch wood) we have not had an incident when any person has been injured on the motorway.

I appreciate the measures that have been put in place and this will further reduce any risks that may arise from the motorway and airfield location.

…..and Duxford of 1977 was nothing like the Duxford of today in terms of flying activity (and out of character buildings).

From the BBC

Restrictions have been placed on flights by vintage aircraft at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, following a spate of crashes.
Officials at the museum in Cambridgeshire have taken the steps after concerns were raised by nearby residents.

Flying displays will now take place further away from homes in Duxford village and from the M11 motorway which is at one end of the runway.

The announcement, which follows a safety review at the airfield, was made in the run up to the Centenary of Flight Air Show which begins on 6 September.

Duxford residents have been campaigning for changes to be made following three crashes in the past two months.

Aerobatic manoeuvres, unless specifically authorised, have been prohibited in areas near the village, which is south-east of the airfield.

Ted Inman, Duxford Airfield’s director, said the steps should reassure residents that safety issues are being taken very seriously.

“As a result of a number of recent incidents at Duxford and people’s understandable concerns over safety we have introduced measures which we believe will further reduce risks associated with the operation of a licensed airfield,” he said.

Two people lost their lives in the Fairey Firefly crash in July
He added the safety at the airfield has always been paramount and that the vintage planes have always been maintained to a very high standard.

“Old aircraft such as these are very intensively maintained possibly to a higher standard than modern commercial aircraft,” he said.

“We probably have the best concentration of knowledge in Europe as far as flying old aircraft is concerned.

“The measures we have announced will reduce the potential impact on our neighbours and we would seek to reassure people that we take these things very seriously.”

Duxford resident Jim Longstaff said: “It’s been a long time coming, but I am delighted and relieved that restrictions have been put in place to protect us.”

The safety review was carried out after two men were killed on 12 July when a vintage Fairey Firefly crashed during an air show.

Three weeks later a two-seater L39 Albatross came down in fields close to the museum. The pilot escaped without any injuries.

The last recorded crash was on 18 August when the world’s only flying Bristol Blenheim bomber crashed on landing at the airfield. The pilot and crew member escaped unhurt.
