I heard that MH434 is in for an engine change. Will they fit a new 66 or wil it be another one?
I have another question to:
Is there any high performance spits flying today, more power, lighter than stock??
I have heard Spit V EP120, but i dont know.

Ahhh is your boss doing it Y11F? How difficult is it to get CAA approval to do a zero-time? Ditto parts for the task?

And very nice it looks too….

It’s getting a zero timed Rolls Royce Merlin 66 very soon.

Any Engine news?

I took a Merlin 70 series (mosquito) out of MH434 and fitted a Merlin 66 when we did the major in 93/94 i think it was. God knows what it has in it now, I left OFMCo in 99.

MH434 used to have M66 until now, but i don’t know which mark of the engine is to be fitted now.

Any engine news for MH434?
Will it be a new M66?

Typical of a Spitfire…. needing to be pushed rather than flown….

What abaut MH434? I have heard that she could be pushed more after she was rebuilt.
I think you’ll find that most freshly rebuilt Spits can be ‘Pushed’ more due to having new non-magnesium rivets fitted, as used during manufacture/repair in WWII, as they have a tendendcy to ‘pop’ after a few years of such ‘pushing’ 😉

The only ones I can think of are Charles Church’s EE606 and also AB910
Yes Tom, I had forgotten about 606 ‘The Ultimate Spitfire’ 🙁

Does anyone know when AB910 was first fitted with a four blade prop?

The only ones I can think of are Charles Church’s EE606 and also AB910 when ACM Wheeler owned her. Both were fitted with four-bladed props and EE606 had clipped wings, not sure about AB910s guise when it was used for racing post-war, or what engines they used, was ‘606 using a 35?
The fighter jockeys who used to fly the “clipped, clapped and cropped” LFVbs used to say they’d outperform just about anything at low/medium level in a dogfight, I recall one story of a MKXIV getting trounced by an LFVb in a mock-dogfight but I’m assuming that the straight-line speed wasn’t as good, say as a Tempest, seing as they weren’t used against the V1s.

A similar question was asked on the Avi8 froum a while back (I wonder if Treadstone is MH434 on that board?) and I tried to answer it as best I could.

I was hoping some Spit experts and restorers might chime in! 🙂
Cheers

Also EP120 has no Merlin 55 engine fitted at present, its in several pieces in the workshop having the supercharger looked at!!
True 😀
IIRC most Baby spits are fitted with a Merlin 35 which has a very high Mod.state.
Also true, thats why I put that in by mistake 🙂

Fuel types are also a factor, wartime grades gave better performance.

All this talk of EP120 is making me want to watch Dark Blue World again!

Thanks Bruce – corrected! 😮 I was trying to use EP120 as an example of a ‘stock’ aircraft of which she is one of the best.
PS: Bruce – your PM box is full!
