new engines for the F-5

A few months back on this forum the idea of reengining the F-5 was discussed. I personally thought there was no way a turbofan the same diameter as the J85 could match the ultra high rate of flow of that little turbojet. Recently Ive been reading about bizjets and have heard of an engine that has absolutely revolutionized performance and effiecency for this class of light jet. This engine is the Williams-Rolls FJ44 series. The backround of this engine is that Williams, an american company that built cruise missle engines found they needed to diversify when the defence drawdown occured at the end of the cold war. They teamed up with Rolls Royce to convert their engines for civilian use. The fans are milled as one piece to the spool from a single billet of steel. It only has about 700 seperate parts compared to about 2600 parts on a conventional comparably sized turbofan. This engine has very low fuel consumption and high thrust for its class. It has about half the specifac fuel consuption to the J-85 at the same thrust rating. The diameter of the FJ44 is about 21 inches and the J85 I believe is about 19 inches. The F-5 already has very impressive range, it might be possible that the FJ44 could double this range.
