Has anybody ever seen the movie “Made,” where Vince Vaughn hits the attendant call button 4 times in the span of 2 minutes? LOL, great scene. I have never once hit that thing, out of all my flights. I just wait till they come around, or I go to the galley myself. FA’s have one of the hardest jobs dealing with unruly pax, and all sorts of other riffraff. My trip to N.Y. 2 weeks ago, I was flying business class on UA from LAX-JFK, and I was reading the TWA, An Airline and It’s Aircraft, and one of the FA’s brought it to the attention of the purser who used to fly TWA, and she started rubbing the book and hugging it. We strolled down memory lane together, she was awe inspired by the book, so I told her where she could get it. Good memories.

Mongu, no way, you’re excactly the kind of pax I (and most of my colleagues) like….undemanding!

I have no problem with anyone talking or not paying attention during the saftety demo, it’s up to them and you can’t police every pax on a 747. All I ask is that they don’t talk so loud that pax around can’t hear safety demo instructions. The demo is done on the IFE screens now so it’s up to the individual pax.

My moto is always, get out of it what you want, the demo is done for YOUR safety, it’s up to you.

Going back to the original point, I think that if you don’t even notice our uniforms or listen to PA’s then hopefully we’ve done something right and you are relaxed as I sometimes look at pax, in traveller (economy) mostly and they look so bored and cramped up, looking at us (not at me as I’m a 45 y/o 6ft bloke that should have stopped flying years ago but enjoys the lifestyle!) as I am told we are sometimes the best entertainment!!!! You can only watch so much BBC news and IFE. It sounds like you are probably in one of the premium classes in which case hopefully you are comfotable and don’t need to stare at the seat back in front of you for twelve hours!!!!

Joking apart, that’s the way I think pax should be, relaxed, chilled and left alone. If they want anything, hit the call bell and we can provide it, sometimes I think too much is thrown at pax and we disturb them too much. The majority of pax I come into contact with are businessmen. Some want the all singing, all dancing service which I am happy to provide but most just want to be left alone to work (outbound) or sleep and relax (inbound).

Every pax is different and come onboard with different needs and expecations, finding common ground is the most challenging and difficult part of each flight.

Oh, one of those types! I was once flying first class on a UA 733, of which there are only 2 rows of 4 each. I was in 2B and the 2 gentlemen in 1A and 1B did not cease their conversation while the safety briefing was being read. Well, the 2nd flight attendant (not the purser, as they were sitting down while reading), got really pissed off and told them to shut it! Serves them right!

I’m impressed GD!

I can’t even remember what the uniforms look like let alone what they actually said. I’m afraid I am the bored/inattentive/paper reading kind of passenger that the cabin crew dosn’t like!

United uses the term purser. Even on short haul flights with only 3 flight attendants. They will say at the beginning, “My name is so and so, and I’ll be your purser for today’s flight. Joining me today is…..” See? Some of us do listen to the flight attendants!

Most charter airlines use cabin supervisor or number one.

Atlanta use the term “Purser” to signify the cabin crew member in charge of the whole cabin – cabin manager some may call it

Hi Mongu

No not a silly question and most pax don’t listen to pa’s anyway!

I’m not sure about other airlines, I think we all have a similar title for the same job.

On long haul BA aircraft the person in overall charge of the cabin is the CSD, Cabin Services Director. There is then generally a Purser for each cabin, First, Club World, Traveller Plus and Economy. They all report to the CSD.

On short haul aircraft there is generally one Purser and they are in overall charge of the cabin.

All the best.

This may be a silly question…

Is it only BA, or do other airlines use the term “purser” as well?

I’ve heard it used on ships before, but not on airlines other than BA. Ofv course I may have simply not noticed…

Hi everyone and thanks for all of the replies.

In answer, I’m a purser with BA, been flying now for many years and really enjoy it.

Are there any other crew out there from other airlines?

All the best.
