Just gone past RAF Wittering and the GR3 has been replaced with a shiny Grey GR9 🙂

Like it! For some reason anyone who drives one of those tends to remind me of those things that you find on the outside of the cactus!

You sit in the drivers seat, disengage the clutch, start the engine, put it into gear, engage the clutch, press the accelerator and use the steering wheel…

Please note that ‘engage brain’ or ‘open eyes’ is not included…. :p

There is a filter lane off the A1. See following map link. Looks like travelling too fast to make the turn.

shame it wasn’t one of those horrible Citroen Cactus things, I would happily paint the kill marking myself on it

They’re going to have to put a Renault kill marking on the cockpit side……

From what i was told in no particular order christines list of unfortunate incidents

Ht wire strike in norway

Fell off jacks twice once in italy i think

Scalped a tradesman when his head got stuck in uc doors

Mortared in afghan

Wing dropped whilst unloading fron c17 at brize rendering the only major part u/s also

Fin assembly went onto ac 23 zd375 which had a bad history also took ages to clear flight test

Plus at least 3 major birdstrikes

It had only just past 1000 hours when mortar strike renderered it cat4 and was enjoying a period of good servicability at the time

Good candidate for gate gaurd though

Better known as Christine or that F$%^&* B*£^&*” Jet.

It suffered its fair share of mishaps too including I am pretty sure, suffering quite a lot of damage ‘overseas’ resulting in a C17 ride home and an incident with a jack which led to an extended repair scheme.

Ah – it was that one !

Not sure about the plastic FSM, but XZ135 GR3 nose went to Everett’s

The last I heard was that the plastic FSM hadn’t met its reserve and was going to be re-tendered!

Interesting to get confirmation of XZ135’s new home!

so what is happening to the airfield?
no harriers no wittering!

The station itself is an extremely busy RAF Logistics centre, I thought that the airfield was becoming home to Grob Tutors but can’t find much on that?

One would hope for some kind of dedicated Harrier display at RAF Wittering following the stations long association with the Harrier Force. As said they already have a GR1, T4 and T8, add the GR3 from the gate, a spare GR9 and T10 from Cottesmore.
Have the Royal Navy recovered their two FA2’s from Cottesmore yet ?, would be nice to keep one of those at Wittering as well.
Indeed hope Yeovilton Museum recieves a GR9.

Seems a shame to get rid of XV779, hope it will find a decent home somewhere.
The third oldest surviving Harrier, GR.1 DB XV279, is at Wittering aswel, anyone know what its future maybe?

Shrapnel damge was indeed the reason behind the trip home in a C17. We went over to have look at it before it was shipped home and it needed more than filler…….Speed tape maybe

With the GR.9 in place, what are the plans for the GR.3?
