For those who were wondering what the photo-scrum was at the RAF Museum, Hendon on Monday, the embargo on the news has now been lifted.
The photography was the unveiling of a new name and logo for the former Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators, who as of today have been awarded a Royal Charter by Her Majesty and henceforth will be known as “The Honourable Company of Air Pilots”.
When GAPAN was set up as a City Livery Company in 1929, one of its aims was to give professional pilots the same status as Master Mariners. The ‘Honourable Company’ status (only awarded four times since the 17th century) is now held by both. I guess then today founder members Sir Sefton Brancker, Frederick Handley-Page and Alan Cobham among others, might just be saying ‘mission accomplished’!
