Just thought you might be interested in this new Hunter, stationed in the North of England, and pictured earlier today.
As you can see from the people, this is a model, but what a model! This aircraft is 1/3 scale, scratch built by Dr Keith Mitchell, and has a wingspan of 11′ 6″ and with a length of 15′ 6″. The aircraft has been built over the last six years and is expected to fly in the next couple of weeks.
From memory, Keith said it was finished in 43 Squadron colours.
There is a large model show this weekend up in Northumberland, so hopefully I can post some of the other monsters that will be flying, like for example, a huge DH Hornet, and a 1/2 scale Miles Magister.

I’ve always thought it’s a terrible shame to build a stunning looking model and plonk those pathetic stubby 2 blade props on them. Surely they could make some bigger but less efficient ones so it goes the same rate but looks better??
The problem is the ‘Direct Drive’ engines available. Sticking a big prop on won’t even get the model off the ground, the engine won’t turn it. Hardly any manufacturers makes large GEARED petrol engines, and it is the lack of gearing that prevents the use of multi-blade props. Simply adding a larger engine doesn’t help as you end up adding more weight than the size of airframe can carry, pushing the wing loading too high, and you end up flying a high powered concrete block, with matching flying qualities.
Remember also that gearing is designed for a particular engine/prop/airframe combination, and these engines are being designed fo the mass market, not specific aircraft, therefore they need to be multi-use.
If there was a simple, available way of driving scale props, we would all be doing it. Two blades aren’t through choice.

Fantastic model obviously the fruits of much labour. The powerplant must be awesome as in Photo 4 the pilot appears to be pinned well back in the cockpit by the force involved in just taxiing!
