I can’t work out if this a ‘new’ permanent livery for JAL or an anniversary type one? If the former, I very much dislike. Looks like a leased aircraft that they didn’t want to paint in full.
On another note, I do find it interesting that JAL and ANA seem to be keeping the commercial 767 line open. I thought they were going to close it several years ago? Seems as though a new one comes off the line every month or so. I wonder if, because Boeing will be producing 767 tankers, Boeing will keep offering the commercial 767 now the 787 is in full production.

Most likely the new one.
Boeing have been building and storing 787s for a while now. This one was most likely rolled out of the paint shop before JAL went all cheap on themselves.

Just saw this: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Japan-Airlines–/Boeing-787-846-Dreamliner/1875764/L/&sid=085901d062701dcffce4f6698027480d.
I wonder which livery future JAL 787s will be in?

The current Air New Zealand livery is too white (they are now painted without the pacific wave), but I sense that won’t always be the case.
I personally think airlines have a significant amount to gain from an attractive and interesting livery. In that they stand out and become free advertising. Even to the non-aviation enthusiast, the random bystander will turn and say “Oh! Look at that plane! What airline is that?”

Air New Zealand always does a good livery, I reckon.
Perhaps JAL should look to them for inspiration.

Sandy: Sorry, meant no disrespect… fantastic piece of work you put together there, a clear talent… I was only voicing my own opinion (My eyes like what my eyes see…)
The JAL scheme (on the 767) is certainly not a work of art akin to the Qantas lump etc…, but, i find it pleasing on the eye AND in times of austerity, i’m sure the JAL shareholders will appreciate less money going on a livery..
Funny things liveries IMO, i don’t really see the point (Apart of course from a photogenic view!!) passengers most often don’t even see the outside of their aircraft in most cases and doubt anyone would choose flying one airline over another because the plane looks nicer! That said, as a photographer, i’m glad airlines go to the expense they do 😀

Theirs, Sandy. Yours in an infinitely greater effort. 🙂

Mine or theirs?!

I still maintain airlines have better things to do with their money than spend it all turning their planes into works of art, but I have to say to my eyes that really is awful!

To be honest, I slapped that design together in a few minutes using a mixture of 80s livery colours and 90s/00s livery colours. There was no real cost evaluation done.
In short: eye candy.
P.S. Cheatlines, done correctly can add a feeling of experience and nationality to a livery. They can make it stand out from the rest

It’s probably as cheap a livery as JAL can get away with. They don’t have much money, do they?

You can describe it in one word….’Vapid’

Was going to agree with the above about the 787 drawing i too find cheatlines very retro, wayyyy out of date now.. It seems basic is best nowadays.. i personally find this new livery very refreshing, brilliant to see the Crane back (Would look outstanding on an A380!!),although certainly bland it is a huge improvement on the previous/current livery!

Tis amazing what the briefest flurry of imagination brings you:
Looks good, but cheat lines are so 70’s.
Leading edges can’t be painted either, there’s a hot air a heater mat in there.
I love that tail design of yours, but it brings a 4th colour into the job, which brings costs with it.

Well, I like it anyway.
Reminds me of the old JAL DC8s and DC10s. 🙂

Ewww…no; that is by far the most awfully bland, boring, cheap, dull and frankly rubbish livery design I have ever seen! BIG thumbs down.:D

I like it, but they need a cheatline on the fuselage to break up the white abit.

That is exactly what I understand Boeing are doing.
Back on topic:
Though I can understand the fiscal thoughts behind this “livery” it does not do anything for the company other than make them look cheap.
