New Land speed record.

I see we have broken the old land speed record of 174 MPH, yesterday at Elvington, and have set a new record of 204 MPH, and this is for a car, run on electricity.
Nice to see that us Brits still have the talent, expertise, and the “Go for it” feeling back. I was begining to think we had lost the will for that sort of thing.

It’s a stretched Suzuki Hayabusa. The guy bought it I think without an engine, then stretched the basic chassis to fit in a flash type boiler, and steam engine.
Keltruck are the main sponsor of the project.
A friend and fellow volunteer at the collection has been involved in consulting on the steam layout.
The record at present doesn’t actually exist, because it’s never been done before but they’re aiming at the low hundreds–I think about 120mph to start with.

LOL!

Not really, I loved the look of the road race Harley, pre-Buhl, especially Lucifer’s Hammer and then one, a fellow in Japan built, and finally won with, before the professional Battle of the Twins class in U.S. was castrated for being too popular.

I used to ride a MV Agusta 750 America, so I had my day in the sun.

What size is the shovel 🙂

More to the point Gary, exactly where does the Fireman sit?.(For our younger members, the fireman was the chap that put coal into the firebox of a steam engine, he kept the fire alight, NOT to put it out)

Want One!! I like the sleek looks and design.

?Really?

It reminds me of the old Buhl Harleys that looked like some one dropped a turd on the ground and then put wheels on it.

Hmmm, Just wondering if it would have an electric horn, or a steam whistle. Also where the exhaust is, if it is indeed a steam operated M/bike, could be slightly uncomfortable if too close to ones 6.

Keltruck is Scania I think, so perhaps they are the sponsors.

Nice phot, BTW.

There is a small team in this country of ours who are working towards winning the steam powered motorcycle land-speed record.
It may sound like a joke but getting a boiler and heat source small enough but still powerful enough to move anything is quite an act of engineering.

I was watching, it was amazing how quickly the support crew could lift the car, take the panel off the belly, and replace all those AA batteries! 😀

Tony, That’s completely unfounded and not true.
I have it on good authority, that the driver failed to take enough £1.00 coins for the onboard leccy meter.
Next time you post, please get your facts right. :highly_amused:

The electric car was slated as capable of faster speeds, however it got so far down the runway it ran out of extension cord and pulled the plug out.

Andy, Many years ago, I purchased a MAMMOD steam powered Traction engine, I put a small trailer on the rear, and was surprised at just how much, such a small steam engine would pull.
I am sure we will see this venture come to fruition.
I served my time on Steam and diesel with B.R. and they stated then, that steam was the most powerful, and efficient power sourse, there was.
Good luck to them.
Guess you have already volunteered to be the Test rider?.

Indeed, although I would exclude your last remark. I think it exemplifies the much maligned “British spirit” which we have had for generations. The pioneering spirit of the US is just as tenacious.
