Just received the end of year journal from the Linc Lanc Association, which contains some lovely photos.
Great to hear that flame dampers are being made for the Lanc- but £33,000! That’s over eight grand an engine! 😮
Of special interest was the list of new merchandise- a 2 and a half hour DVD following the Lancaster’s overhaul at Coventry! I’ll be ordering one of those pronto, then! 😀

Received my ‘Lancaster At Coventry’ DVD from the LLA today, and 146 very happy minutes later, I’d like to recommend it to all Lancaster enthusiasts- it’s well filmed, detailed, humerous, doesn’t rush or skimp on anything- it’s great! Well done to Roger White for single-handedly filming such a great video diary of the entire overhaul. 😀
Poor fellow came in the hangar every Thursday and put up with our abuse… well, you know what its like in a maintenance hangar… banter, etc. I agree – excellent work. I especially like the music accomanying the Linc Lanc assn visit….:D

Fluffy, I heard from a reliable scource that as no original H2S blisters exist, BAE SYSTEMS as the design authority for the Lancaster will not give their blessing for a replica to be fitted. So if this is the case how can we have flame dampers made and fitted but no H2S blister?
On a personal note I say leave it alone, the clean fuselage of the Lancaster looks a lot better without a large pregnant looking bulge underneath :p
I have to agree, I prefer the Lancasters lines without without the H2S blister.

Missed that one then! When did it fly over the dams?
Chris
Don’t know. No crowds along the shore so assume they didn’t tell anyone in advance. I hope the LLA have it as a print for sale next year, its a great picture.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Fluffy!!!

Right the reason we cannot fit the H2s dome is there is nobody that can manufacture one to the ORIGINAL drawings out of perspex. Bae would not let us fit a fibreglass replica, so having flame dampers or new bomb aimers blister or any item manufactured to an original drawing using the correct spec of material is not a problem.

That was my understanding of things too, from Fluffy, I believe.
To this layman that’s kinda strange really- for what have the Lanc’s various new bomb aimer’s blisters over the years been if not perspex ‘replicas’?!

H2S Dome
I heard that BAE Systems wouldn’t authorize a replica H2S dome being fitted, but had said ok to an original being fitted if one could be found.
Is that correct?

Fluffy, the Classic Flight’s Dakota,G-ANAF, has a large radome on the front of it, it was fitted when it was doing trials work a while ago, as far as I am aware it is made from fibreglass, which I presume would be okay for a replica radome.
It is currently on the floor at the side of the aircraft so I can take some pictures of it send them to you if you wish.
It should still be possible to find out who made it,shalll I make some enquires ?

Although it isn’t the kind of thing that gets publicized in books, LLA has already donated in the region of £50k towards the Spitfire restoration.
The cash for the Lanc is extra.
That is correct LLA have indeed supported the rebuild of TE311 and many other projects on BBMF. The exhaust shrouds will be manfactured and fitted prior to the 2008 season.
Getting a turret operational will cost a lot more than 30k as for the H2s dome we have looked at that several times and cannot find a company to make such a large perspex item.

That’s certainly true, yes.

LLA
Another thought- what would that £33,000 do for Fluffy & Co’s Spit restoration- more than 8 bits of curved steel, surely?

I would presume that there is more involved than just the shroud; perhaps it includes all the exhaust stubs in a similar fashion to the “flame damper exhaust stubs” that were fitted to PZ865 last year.
See the news item “New Cans For PZ865” dated 10 Oct 2006 on the following link and that were also pictured on page 44 of the 2007 BBMF yearbook:

Probably also comes out of a different budget!;)

Yes I would like to see her sport a H2s blister.
Hello all, Why Is there a problem for the BBMF to fit an H2s blister?
