New look Airliner World!

Just a quick heads up about the latest edition of Airliner World…they have changed the fonts and redesigned the major features sections. I actually quite like it…the article on airline branding is a must read!

Hi,

Price in France is very expensive too, but it’s the same for AFM, AI, or any foreigner aircraft magazine. So I suscribed, it’s a very nice magazine in my humble opinion 😎

I have been getting Airliner world magazine since 2000/2001 and i have bought it monthly ever since.
I understand with the comments above made about the style of writing and font being different in the latest issue especially in the news section as i think that it would probably work better by keeping it all in the same bold font that has been used previously. However apart from that i still find this latest edition as good a read as ever. I’d also like to say that i really like articles such as the one about the alcohol drink sachets as it shows different aspects of the airline industry and ways in which the airline industry is changing afterall thats what the magazines about isn’t it?
My favourite articles overall though are the ones about UK airlines especially holiday charters such as the one in April about Mytravel and previous ones including Thomas Cook and Thomsonfly. Hopefully there’s more on the way soon:D

Thanks

I am not a regular on the forum anymore, but ill voice my opinion anyway.

I bought most AW issues in Australia although steaply priced, while i also tried other magazines as well such as Aviation Australia.

Somethings are long over-due in AW in my opinion. The cover style needs a face-lift, its the same i have seen since 1998. Photographic styles can be changed, even the heading fonts can be changed. I have not seen the changes inside the magazine yet, but i strongly believe a face lift of the cover will help AW attain a fresh feel.

About the news section as Tony mentioned, you cannot possibly try to compare the pace between AW and the net. Again, people are right that they won’t buy the magazine even if it boasts of an extensive news section. hence, the quality and most importantly the appeal of the features has to be AW’s trump card. Features about rarely heard airlines, airlines from smaller countries and people who are behind the airlines. Possibly a head-to-head section will be interesting, profiling the head honchos of the industry.

Just my 2 cents worth. 🙂

New Look ALW

Hi Guys,
Yes I do look through the Forum (although not perhaps as often as I should).
Thanks for all the comments regarding the new fonts. They miirror comments that I have had from emails etc. Basically, some people think they are great and some not so. I am assuming that the adverse comments are from the News section and not from the rest of the magazine. We will look at this as I am not 100% sold on the style as yet.
Other questions that have been raised:
Not a lot we can do about the cost of the magazine overseas. We make no more profit than anywhere else, it is just the extra shipping costs. I advise overseas readers to get a subscription – it works out cheaper in the long run.
About the Sachets article, it is curious that some found it very interesting and some not. It goes to show that you cannot please everyone all the time.
Regarding the News. We actually finish putting the magazine together between 12 and 14 days before the magazine hits the streets, due to the production and distribution system, so for many there is a lot of old news. If something comes out just after we have gone to press it can be 5 weeks before it is read in the magazine.
Please keep the comments – good or bad – coming. We cannot improve unless we are told what may be wrong.
Tony Dixon

From reading the thread, I got the impression that I was going to see major changes to the design of the mag – picked it up this morning, and it took me a while to notice anything different. I still like the magazine though 🙂

Does anyone know if Tony Dixon (Editor of Airliner World) is a member of this foum at all?

I do wonder if he has taken note of some of the comments that have been made, and it would be also interesting to know if he has had any more comments made about the new look and how well it has (or has not, in some cases!) been recieved by other regular readers?

I am sure Key Publishing pay attention to their customers. If you want to contact Tony please contact email Key Publishing

I do admit it is enjoyable reading the articles like in last months the ‘Titan Airways’, ‘Hong Kong Express’ and ‘Route Proving on the A380’ were a very good read, but some such as the ‘Malta Fire Training…’ and that bizarre article about drinks in sachets didn’t interest me at all.

Anyone else feeling the same or are most people here dedicated monthly buyers or on subscription?

I share exaclty the same opinion Future Pilot, I do like it in general, but some of the articles are a bit bizarre and boring, however, I did actually read and enjoy that article about the drinks in sachets because it does go to show how innovative we are, and also the lengths that some airlines (i.e TAP Air Portugal) will go to in order to reduce weight, and ultimatley costs.

I am a life-long subscriber to it though because it has become a regular christmas present from my grandparents, as they never know what to buy me!:D

It’s A$16.95 in this country which is about 7 English pounds

Why does the magazine cost so much elsewhere in the world, is it something to do with the costs of distributing it around the world that increases the price?

Having bought the latest issue yesterday I did not notice any changes (until seeing this thread and compared it with last months) Not keen on the different fonts used – it looks amateurish and inconsistent. Any publications at my workplace have a ‘style guide’ which states fonts / fonts sizes / use of bold / underline / italics so that a document looks consistent throughout.

The KISS (keep it simple stupid) acronym is often forgotten but is essential is making publications look professional and these change are imho a backward step.

Must confess I have never bought it, there is a limit to one’s obligations and finances, but I often read it in the store. If you are a dedicated commerical afficionado, I think it is a necessity!:)

I enjoyed reading it when I was home and also had a subscription. Admittedly, some of the news articles were ‘old news’ to me as I had read them on these forums. However, to be fair, I am so keen in aviation that every article in the magazine interested me to some extent and every article had some snippit of information I could take away. Alas though, I have not found any English copies while I am here in Germany but will take up another subscription when I’m home in Sept. Oh! And I guess that means I have not seen the new look…..which is what the thread was about :p

I subscribed to Airliner World for three years on the trot, but when my last subscription came to an end a couple of years back, I decided not to renew it again. The news wasn’t really news (as mentioned above, it was read on forums and internet weeks beforehand). It seemed that whilst I was subscribed, the quality went from good to bad, and the cover price went up numerous times.

Is this the one with Titan Airways in and the A380 in New york etc.

James

No, James…..

I must admit, I stopped buying it for a long time, but I tend to buy it now as it is something semi-interesting to read at work! If not, there is always someone elses copy lying about. It’s certainly not as good as it used to be though.

Have some Americans took over the magazine as it seems to have gone alot more commerial looking than it was.

I hate the new fonts they look unprofessional as some are in bold, some arn’t and some are in italics. Looks like it was just thrown together by GCSE students and no doubt it cost thousands to do that by some “consultancy”!!!!

Im not against change by any means but the magazine looks alot less professional inside now that it did before. They are going going the road of “Heat” or “Hello”…. (not that i read those….)

Hmmm whether I should publically state this or not I don’t know :p, but I rarely if ever buy Airliner World anymore for some reason. The most recent edition I brought was last months one for my American flights from Heathrow.

Same here, I am sorry to say. I like the magazine a lot, but the price they dare ask for it here in NL is insane. It is already over 9 euros, fast approaching 10 (~6,76 pounds).

Also availability has gone down a lot. Just two years ago every good news agents carried it, thus improving the likelyhood of me buying it on an impulsive because there was an interesting article. Nowadays I need a Ouija board and a divining rod to even get to see one! Only places I know of that still carry it are the stores at Schiphol airport! If I go to buy it there I can add another 5 euros (minimum) in parking costs… me thinks not!

On the bright side, Air International and Air Forces Monthly are still available in the region. But also horribly expensive.
