Low cost airlines are booming. Surfing on the web I found something called mama air, with a horrible livery and of course B737 will start oparations in 2003 from a strange airport called London-Manston?. Any idea about this project. http://www.mama-air.com
Other airline in Spain…Pullmantur air (belonging to Spanish tour operator Pullmatur) and whose main objective is to transfer passengers to the caribbean to Pullmantur Cruises. Other project, using MD….something, will start in Madrid soon.

RE: New low cost in UK
I have some news on Manston.
This month saw the opening of a new apron at Manston airport which heralds the 20 year programme to estalish the airfield as a major international base for both cargo and passenger traffic. The 600m taxiway is from the terminal apron to the runway.

RE: New low cost in UK
Rail Track (I think it would be them, who knows !!!) take some convincing in building a rail link. Manston would have to hit a critical mass before they would consider it. They could run a bus link to Ramsgate Station to start with. Manston does sometimes have summer service to the CI as well.

RE: New low cost in UK
being a local to manston
1) runway -ex vulcan dispersal base and i’ve seen concord there so got to be long enough
2) roads – they built a two lane dual carrigeway all the way out to it and they are widening half the m2. while its not motoway all the way its varies between 4 and 2 lane dual carrigeway
3) rail – this is the south east – we have the shitest railways in the country – we have 3rd rail so trains from th rest of the coutry don’t work and all the rolling stock is mstly knackerd ancient (think 30 to 40 year old) slam door cccarrieges that are death traps. come rush hour all the trains are packed tighter than sardines 🙂 (personal experience). the track goes through some of the oldest streches of railway in the country and is shite!
but manston is a better option than a 4th heathrow runway, 2nd gatwick or stanstead runway and that part of kent s full of jobless (its real high for round here)

RE: New low cost in UK
You beat me to it andrew, AW did have an aritcle on it, from what I remeber it was a good one.
It is possible Manston will become Londons 3rd airport pure becasue it has good road/rail links, and has a HUGE runway that will handle the A380 easily.
Also with regards to the “Union Jack” being on A/C and saying we should be proud of it I completelly agree. But please call the flag by its proper name of “Union Flag” it is only ever called “Union Jack” when it is flying on a sea going vessel.

RE: New low cost in UK
This is the first livery i can actually say i like! I think its smart. Yeh, perhaps the Union Jack doesnt go with the rest of the a/c, but what the hell! lets be loud and proud!
Manston eh? If it goes well it will begin to put Manston on the map more i think.
The tuff competition from the newly enlarged easyjet will be a problem for them i think. EZY’s large operation will mean they can benifit from things such as economies of scale (business talk) and therefore keep fares down due to the low costs. Mama will have trouble competing with this i think.
Good luck to them though.
Regards
Ben

RE: New low cost in UK
I like the Union Jack tail fin.
Seems to be all the rage these days – BA, Virgin and BMI have all adopted it. I think the outrage over the BA “world tails” saga focused a few attentions (just think Margaret Thatcher covering up a tail at a presentation!). I mean, nearly every other country is proud of their flag so why not the UK??

RE: New low cost in UK
I think the union jack is what adds that extra spice to the livery, even though it doesn’t match the rest. If the tail was purple as well, I don’t think it would look as good. The union jack is what initially caught my eye when I saw it.

RE: New low cost in UK
I think they have railway lines quite near by so establishing train links to central london would not be that difficult.I’m still not sure about terminal facilities though,I know the airport takes in cruise flights to the US but these are probably not as often as Mama Air would be operating so really are they going to need terminal extension and if so when because if Mama Air really want to start operations there soon then biulding work is going to be needed to started soon.

RE: New low cost in UK
Manston certainly has the runway length and maybe and adequate terminal initially, but I thinks its quite far-away from London without any good ground transportation links. The nearest motorway would be the M2.

RE: New low cost in UK
I like it..! It’s a great livery but I think the Union Jack spoils it slightly. This tells people it is British, but I don’t think it matches the purple too well.
Wonder how long it will be before easyJet buy them out!

I think that’s a great livery! Very unique. Better than Southwest’s old one.

Anyway its good to see some airlines hopefully staring fights from Manston, what are their terminal conditions though? Are they big enough for the demand of a new airline?
