New members to the Star Alliance

The Chief Executive Board of Star Alliance has approved the addition of three new members to the Alliance over the next 12 months.They include,Spanair,Asiana and LOT.
“We are proud that Asiana, LOT and Spanair have chosen to join Star Alliance,” the Chief Executive Board said in a statement. “They will add further strength and quality to our worldwide route network by increasing its global reach and thereby its customer value. With the addition of Asiana, LOT and Spanair we have taken another important step in the development of Star Alliance as the world’s premiere airline alliance,” the chief executives added.

emirates dont fly to Tokyo, iwanted to go to europe via to Tokyo so i could look aorund there,so JAL was the only choice i had.

as yet Emirates do not fly to Japan,I wanted to go to Europe via Japan so as i could visit Tokyo,the only way was on JAL,is that fair enough.

Keltic, are you talking about SAS, or just Spanair in specific, acting stupid. Or both? And Mr. Monster, is that the ONLY reason “Oneworld is all over Star” or are there other, more valid reasons, as well? I’m just curious.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-06-02 AT 01:07 PM (GMT)]I’m not saying that you should go via ICN or NRT.What I mean is that UA does not have much room to expand on its mini-hub at Narita from what I have heard so surely ICN is a new much better option for them as they have room to expand so they can fly more passengers in to Asia than they are currently with the allince with Asiana.Incheon is also a great airport for connecting traffic.
By working closely with Star Alliance members in the Northeast and Southeast Asian markets Asiana will become a great asset to the alliance as it will be providing an extended network that will significantly benefit customers and the Star Alliance.

they are 2 hours away from each other,i counted 17 UA planes at narita 2 weeks ago.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-06-02 AT 08:33 AM (GMT)]Well at least Star have got Asia well covered now.Also with Asiana in couldn’t this provide United with room to expand on their connections to ICN?As the airport has plenty of room to expand unlike at NRT where UA has a mini-hub.This could give UA the ability to fly more passengers into Asia using there Star Alliance codeshare with Asiana.
Another reason why Asiana would be good for the alliance is the fact that they fly to a lot of diferent places in China which would be good for people travelling on by Star carriers.
One negative point though is there any chance that Star is overexpanding now.Ain’t there competition laws too which could stand in the way of them?
Just a thought and a bit of research 😉

Well in fact Spanair is SAS….controlled by Scandinavians. They are behaving in an stupid way, canceling profitable flights, launching absurds links, service has dropped drammaticaly and the image is not as it was.

1 June 2002, Hong Kong: The oneworld airline alliance has expanded its lead as the most international of the global airline alliances, with its network now serving 135 territories and countries – 9 per cent more than the nearest rival airline alliance, Star.

The alliance will be holding a meeting this month in Hong Kong to unveil a range of new initiatives. To mark the event crew from the five oneworld carriers represented in Hong Kong took a short sail on The Star Ferry across Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour to tour The Peninsula and afterwards enjoy a cool drink on its sun deck with Hong Kong’s impressive skyline in the background.

They had already been involved in a codesharing agreement with UA(and possibly other Star members aw well) for over a year now. The other 2 additions are very surprising, especially Asiana. Wasn’t Asiana somehow tied in with Oneworld? Not necessarily a full-fledged member, but codeshared with current members? Maybe Oneworld isn’t quite doing it for them. Besides, I thought Star was pretty settled in Asia with Singapore, Thai and ANA. The addition of LOT is surprising, but not as much as Asiana. LOT was in Qualiflyer, which is history, so it seems they were just looking to join another alliance and chose the best one. These 2 European airlines just strengthens STAR in Europe, where Oneworld might be stronger. I was thinking(or hoping) Star’s next addition would come from the MiddleEast, like Saudi Arabian, or better yet, Emirates, both of which UA currently has codesharing aggreements with. Even BWIA would make sense. More wishful thinking, perhaps, would have Virgin Blue join STAR, to take the place of Ansett. But that’s very unlikely to happen.
