In memory of the airmen who took part in the World War II Channel Dash operation – six Swordfish from Manston were sent to intercept the German cruisers Scharnhorst, Gneisenau & Prinz Eugen which were en route from Brest to Germany via the English Channel in February 1942. All 6 were shot down and just 5 aircrew out of 18 survived, Vice-Admiral Ramsay later called it “one of the finest exhibitions of self-sacrifice and devotion to duty the war had ever witnessed”.

Not before time.
Whilst we can’t commemorate every single act of heroism from every war, not even those that are known about, the futile sacrifice of those guys richly deserved some public recognition, beyond simply the medals they were awarded.
Great news.

Highly deserved and long overdue. There is a good but small display at the Spit and Hurri Museum at Manston.
