New Orleans tragedy

Just wondering…

How come the Marines’ hovercrafts and landing Barges aren’t being used in order to locate and rescue the citizens still trapped in the flooded city?

Regards,

Hammer

buT i have one thing. I was in Tampa last year and they evacuated the whole of down town Tampa and palm harbour and the coastal parts much even before the damn thing even hit the coast.

Not a single chopper was there for 24 hours after the hurricane hit new orleans. Everybody new the dykes could not sustain a category 4 hurricane

Yes, Hurricane Charlie (Category 4) was projected to hit Tampa last summer and all of downtown was evacuated. As a matter any low lying area within 100 miles were. As it turn out the Hurricane turn Northeast and went throught the center of the state. Missing most major cities. Yet, still casuing hundreds of millions of dollars. Funny, that New Orleans was so unprepared? I would think the odds of a Hurricane hitting New Orleans would be “much” greater than Tampa. That said, down in the Gulf of Mexico yoou hear so many Hurricane Warnings and most turn out to be nothing…………..

What was everybody doing. why did they neglect the poor men so much.

The American choppers throwing water bottles to people reminds me of indian helicopter throwing food packets in flood affected areas.

By the third day, the news was showing a long line of trucks (obviously police from the flashing lights in their grills) towing air-boats and lined up waiting to put them in the water from one of the freeway on-ramps in New Orleans. From how long it took for them to get there, I would guess that they came from south Georgia (US, not the other one) or south Florida.

An Officer from the Bataan said that the disaster authorities were only using his helicopters, not the landing craft, the troop quarters, or the 60-bed trauma center in his ship. He was unhappy about this, and felt that the civilians running the show didn’t understand all his ship could provide.

In general, many of us are very unhappy about the lack of readiness shown by this disaster. Many agencies have known for many years how vulnerable the area (especially New Orleans) is to a hurricane greater than catagory 3, but little money has been spent to prepare. This situation has been recognized for over 15 years (and discussed on several TV programs), but the politicians of both parties didn’t want to spend large amounts of money on things that might never be used, and which they couldn’t use to get votes right then.

I thought there are many Air boats in the area that are useful in getting people around…
didn’t see any of those in the field though…

It’s a lot quicker and easier for a small group of people to climb into a hovercraft than it is for a helicopter to winch up the same number. Hovercraft like the Griffon 380TD and Griffon 470TD could have quickly shuttled stranded people to safe ground. http://www.griffonhovercraft.com/specs.html

I think the LCAC hovercraft would have been too big to operate in built up areas and I doubt if the water was deep enough for LCU’s.

It’s a shame the local authorites didn’t invest in small rescue hovercraft, they could have made a real difference and are far more efficent than helicopters 🙁

Now seriously, I was wondering the very same. the LCUs & LCM would have been more then ideal for this.

Also they could have sended a carrier down there & taken person on board, after all there is a lot of space in the hangers & they can carrie enougth food as well.
