[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-10-02 AT 07:52Â PM (GMT)]He is most definately not short of money, he owns 2 professional sports teams (Seattle Seahawks football and the Portland Trailblazers basketball team) and he flys to the games in his private 757.
I used to live in Portland and went to a few Blazer games and Paul was always there sometimes with his mother a real rabid Blazer fan.
Nice guy too I understand.

RE: New Picture
One report I read said that he wanted to make it airworthy with it’s original engines.Something tells me the man has more money than sense.

RE: New Picture
This aircraft is the only authentic, flying example of the Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero Model 52. Built in May 1943, it was the 2357th Zero produced. The Air Museum’s Zero flew with the 261st Air Corps where it participated in Operation “Pogo” (the air defense of the Japanese main home islands). In March of 1944, it was reassigned to the air defense of Saipan, Tinian and Palau Islands, and based on Saipan at Asilito Airfield. It was captured at Asilito Airfield in Saipan in June 1944 during Operation “Foraged” and shipped to the US aboard the USS Copahee in July of 1944.
After its capture, the aircraft was flight tested at Patuxent River, Maryland accumulating 190 hours of flight time. One of the pilots to test fly this aircraft, was Charles Lindbergh (Spirit of St. Louis). Discarded by the military after the war, this Zero was acquired by Ed Maloney in 1950. The Zero was restored and first flew in June 1978 and has about 200 hours of flight time since the rebuild. The Zero has done two tours in Japan, one shortly after it was restored and more recently during the summer of 1995. The Zero can be viewed in the Japanese Aircraft Exhibit in Chino.

RE: New Picture
the people at chino say he wants to get it flyable but to do so would call for a complete rebuild and would be almost impossible.

RE: New Picture
This 262 was recently sold to The Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and is now in the “Flying Heritage Museum” in Everett, Washington.
Haven’t heard of the plans for it yet.

RE: New Picture
It is the only one that is original, ie. Sakae instead of Pratt&Whitney.

RE: New Picture
The pictured Zero was in the shop when I went through Chino back in July, it was way in the back so you could barely see it.
I’ve never seen it fly but it always goes up after I leave.
Nice picture Michelle.

RE: New Picture
Actually mate, it’s on of three now flying, and another one is soon to join them, all of the Zeke’s are fully restored from parts found in various places around the world, three were used in PH with the rest being the T-6 copies, or digitally added, I read the full story about it some time ago in a Flypast mag (Or was it Flight Path, I’ll have to check on that).
Anyway yes it was in accurate in the movie, they were flown in those colours sadly, yet the light grey was the colour of the day for IJN, in fact these machines were not of the IJN, but actually the IJA, but the signifigance of adding them was thought to be a powerfull reminder/message. Trust Hollywood to stuff it up.
Give me coffee and no-one gets hurt!

RE: New Picture
Well I certainly hope it was not painted that way, all IJN ZEROs on that day in December were light grey. 🙂
Nice shot.
