This looks great, very much in the mould of Spitfire Ace. I hope it is screened outside of Canada

i find mind numbing head and ear ache works a treat for staying up late. so how many posts does it take to be invited to a forum members get together. wont say much more you know how people get upset when you go off subject.

I meant no argument. After all, Dave is yet to fly to England and sit in a rainy tearoom at Popham while we discuss the physical and mental peculiarities of other form members so I don’t like him THAT much . . . .
It’s nice to know I’m liked a little bit anyway – unlike Pearl Harbor. I attemted to watch a little bit too, and switched off. I have watched it at the cinema when it came out, that didn’t seem quite so bad. But second time around it’s total crud.
Anyway, back to the topic, the ‘Reach For The Sky’ doco sounds like a wonderful thing, doesn’t it? I hope our Canadian friends will let us know what it’s like when it airs, and tell us where we can get a copy.
Peter, are you involved with the production? That’s ‘your’ Lanc at Nanton isn’t it?
PS – Melvyn, once you get your lovely Rearwin flying, you are welcome to swing by and pick me up so I can fly to that teashop for a natter. 🙂

melvyn i thought i was the only one daft enough to be up at this time. only aussies and people with insomnia are on here at this time.
I’ve been in bed, asleep, for almost three hours . . . .

watched the film `midway` the other day. does that have scenes stolen from tora tora tora. were they made at the same time. there was deffinitley a b-17 landing with one wheel down. (for no apparent reason)
Lots of films have stuff that recycles.
Pretty well every B17 docu has stuff from the original Memphis Belle, the Paul Mantz belly landing for a flim (late night can’t remember which) has been used as a ‘real’ piece of wartime combat footage. Stuff from Battle of Britain was used in Dark Blue World and Piece of Cake.
so, the answer is, most probably

Point taken Melvyn … Dave the messenger.”

Joking aside, I think PH is about the worst film I have ever seen. Not just from a “Did they get the aviation right” point of view but from a much deeper perspective of outdated sterotypes, the insular American view of the world (that is also out-of-date more and more) and just it’s insufferable NAFFNESS!
Please introduce me to the director/producer so that I can laugh in their faces. You may have seen on another thread here that revealed the PH launch party alone cost more than the entire film of Dark Blue World. I have not seen DBW but everyone says how much better it was.
Not seen the new docu either but spoke at length to Dave Mallon from Spitfire Ace and he is a “good dude”
Looking forward to seeing the new Canadian one when Discovery plays it twice a week for three years. . .

Point taken Melvyn … Dave the messenger.
All that said though – I must confess, I watched about 30 minutes of it last night on the telly. Oh dear, what a load of … pooh did you say?
But I like Pooh Bear “…tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff…”
By: Melvyn Hiscock - 27th October 2004 at 01:08
and he didn’t get a pasting on the Pooh harbor thread, the film did, dave didn’t.
We like Dave.
Do we like Pearl Harbooooor?
Mmmmm
take a guess . . .

Tom Cruise’s supposed upcoming film is called ‘The Few’, and has nothing to do with ‘Reach For The Sky’. He’s playing a half Brit, half American, not Bader.
You can’t change the thread titles on a thread anyway, they’re locked.

Thanks for that link Dave – you’re right it looks like it might be well worth checking out when it sees the light of day (er, night).
You might like to think about changing the title of this thread to bring it to wider attention. “Reach for the Sky” is the title of Paul Brickhill’s bio on Douglas Bader and I’m not sure if the new film with Tom Cruise has the same title. There will be those who have had it with modern film remakes (think the remake of Memphis Belle and the caning you got for mentioning Feral Harbor!).
What this is all about is a doco on the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan – it may be fascinating provided the morose voice-overs and are kept to a minimum. Not to mention “We’ll meet again”. I have an otherwise viewable Lancaster documentary excessively infused with that over-dramatic gesture.
Well spotted Dave
