New registrations for the Channel Islands.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-jersey-25263731

Following the example of the Isle of Man, the Islands are imitating the ‘M’ register. The registrations are rumoured to be J- and 2- but await confirmation of that fact.

Sorry to drag this back to the top but…

Thanks Mr. V! So 2-REG will allow for 999 registrations! 🙂

If there (as I believe there are!) are 26 letters in the standard alphabet then that (if we leave them all in, is there any need to dump Q for looking like O these days when phonetically they don’t sound the same anyway?) gives 17,576 individual registrations in a 123 format and 456,976 individual registrations in a 1234 format.

Just think yourselves lucky they haven’t yet decided to go over to a barcode on the side…

All the talk about letter and number allocations but is there any reason not to mix

Apart from the countries mentioned earlier, (USA, China, Japan or former Soviet States) plus South Korea and many countries for microlights , there is also Saudi that uses a mixture and Latvia which uses a mixture for microlights and even the UK and France that used mixed on the Concordes.

Just because it’s not normally done doesn’t seem to mean it can’t be??.

Returning to Latvia, in the summer I was confused trying to identify a micolight. It was Profi YL-I11, that is “i” one one:stupid:

Thanks Kervyn! 2-PLAY seems to be a bit camera shy at the moment.

Thanks Geo!
“2-REG” is just a snappy marketing name and not an indication of what the marks applied to the aircraft will look like.

Yes, you are correct. there are no 100% numerical registrations, (yet).

Interesting. I had not thought much beyond the initial nationality prefix. As stated three numbers gives 999 combinations, four numbers 9999 combinations, three letters 25x25x25 (due no Q), which is proving sufficient for most island registers eg Malta after some 45 years of 9H-, or the Republic of Ireland with 90 years of EI-. As Guernsey have a purely numeric registration system for their cars, with no letters involved (or at least did when I was last on the Island), I did rather assume a 2-1234 style registration for their aircraft before I considered the matter further. Am I right in thinking that no other Nation has a purely numerical, prefix and suffix, civil aircraft register (yet)? Indeed has any Nation (outside of USA, China, Japan or former Soviet States) ever used numbers in their registration beyond the Nationality prefix? It would appear that Guernsey will be the first civil register with just a number prefix, not alphabetic or alpha-numeric, so already is a departure from any previous ‘rule’.

I am certain that somebody, with global authority, sets the ‘rules’ for aviation registrations (who, FAI, BV, UNO?). I’m assuming that Jersey and Guernsey, like the Isle of Man and all other West European States will have a total of 5 alpha-numeric digits in the registration, but is this international law, or just a convention that everyone abides by except the USA, Japan, China and former Soviet States?

This thread has caused me to pause and consider a topic I always have taken for granted given the extremely orderly state of civil aircraft markings on a global scale since not that long after aviation got going! No doubt someone will direct me to wikipedia – suppose I should have started there, but this post developed as I typed, it is a bit of a Sunday morning ramble!
