A friend of mine who is an academic specialising in Film and Media has told me that there is some talk of “633 Squadron” being re-made. I don’t have any more details at present but I hope this project does materialise.The original was a good film but it was let down by poor miniature and matte effects. The aerial photography and musical score were brilliant though.
In my view the way to top the original would be to go back to Frederick E Smith’s original 1956 novel and adapt that for the screen. The original novel was much closer to the WW2 RAF than the 1964 film version and had the squadron flying Bostons until about halfway through the book. The airfield (“Sutton Craddock”) was in Yorkshire and the German air attack on it was carried out by Bf110s. However I would retain the original musical score as that could’t be bettered. What do the rest of you think?

Anyone got any ideas as to where they can find people 11 feet tall? Early on in the book there is a descripiotn of the squadron’s Bostons taxiing in with ground crew holding the wingtips.

Why do they keep re-making, surely there must be other stories worthy of telling on film?
17 August 1943.
During the day the 8th had a go at Schweinfurt and Regensburg (and lost about 60 B17’s), that night the RAF went off to Peenemunde (and lost 54 aircraft).
A very big day out.

Frederick E Smith wrote about half a dozen books in the 633 Squadron series.
None had quite the impact of the original but surely one of them would be better than a re-make.

By the way here’s a little query about the original film. They had five airworthy Mosquitoes in the movie but I cannot find a shot in the film featuring more than four flying together and in fact many shots only had three. However there is one shot where five Mosquitoes can be seen taxying together. Anyone like to comment on this.?
Can’t remember the details now but I believe there were 4 airworthy aircraft used in the film (3 x TT.35s and a T.III) and a couple that were taxiable but not flyable.

Yes I know of this website but what I was talking about was some new information emanating from the USA,not that 633squadron.com stuff which has been around for six years.
By the way here’s a little query about the original film. Im all for remaking the original movies especially using CGI,it dosent take anything away from the originals they were just made in a different era for a very different audience .I like Colin’s idea of following the book closer.
But surly there are talented writers out there and plenty of real missions that took place ,with stories to be told.
