New resto project, will need pics..

Not an aircraft, but related…

I’ve just become the owner of a ’43 Ford G8T 1 1/2 ton 4×2 truck. Still has the original paint & hasn’t been messed with too much. It saw light of day this week for the first time in 40 years afteer they dragged it out of the shed it’s been in.

Lot of them went to Russia.. so I could go that route (& I already have 8 Mosins, so it will need a rifle rack in the back window :diablo: )..

or I could go the USAAC route…. if I can find suitably good pics on which to base the paint job….

Going to see it in the AM (it’s 200 miles away) & will get some pics. This is how it looked recently:

It’s bigger than it looks in those pics, the bed is 12ft long…:D

& of course it will need noseart.. or at least *doorart*..

It’s currently 6v, will change it to 12v.

Neg earth.

I’ll pull the starter & get that over to the shop & see if they have 12v equivalents… I’m dumping the 6v genny for an 12v alternator.

When you get around to the rebuild please take some photo’s as you do it and post them back on here.

It’s a nice find i wish you well is this 12v or 24v?, negative earth or positive?

I guess it’s a dynamo which im sure you will swap to a alternator, big clouds of smoke when it fires up!:diablo:

Those horns aren’t original, they’re going in the trash. The original horn is on the front right frame. It looks like one of those “AAAAhooGAH!” horns

That is good progress for a start. Every journey starts with a single step your project has taken a few steps nearer home.

Actually I just moved it a few miles from the ranch to a friends brothers place. It was 230 miles away, now it’s only 205 miles away… I have a free tow available through Triple A… with a 200 mile limit.. after that it’s $7/mile .. so it should cost me $35 to get it home now.;)

I hosed every nut & bolt down with AeroKroil before I left it. Still going to be an ordeal to get the wheels off, especially the rears. I’ll need to pull the head when it gets here if it won’t turn over… something is siezed.. but it may be just the right rear wheels..or possibly the shifter is knackered

A friend here in the UK has the Marmon-Herrington version of this truck. This version was four wheel drive.
He deliberated for ages on the paint scheme but settled for markings with an US Aviation engineer Battalion who tended to use many of them in the UK while the airfields were being built for the USAAF. Dont think they saw much service with the RAF, although there is one knocking about as a RCAF wartime snow blower!

Since it has California plates, you might think of putting it in a California USAAF base markings…Muroc, March, McClellan (a big aircraft modification depot) or perhaps assembly plant colors…a friend has a tug from Douglas.
Lots of options.

I think what I’d like to do.. if possible.. is paint it in “squadron markings”.. if such a thing actually existed… (altho not to the extent that my ’70 Ranchero is painted up like a 78th FG P47 & actually has invasion stripes on it)…. I’m thinking the basic USAAF green with stenciling etc…& then maybe *extra* stenciling indicating a particular sqdrn…

But as you say, lots of options… Right now I need to get it moved from that orchard or it’s going to the scrapper on Tuesday…
