Russia lays down new landing ship
Richard Scott JDW Naval Editor
London
The lead ship of a new class of amphibious landing vessel for the Russian Federation Navy has been laid down at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad.
Designed by the Nevskoye Planning and Design Bureau, the Project 11711 design is expected to displace around 6,000 tons. The as-yet unnamed lead ship is the first of a planned class of five vessels to be built at a total cost of Rb5 billion ($1.8 billion).
Provisional details of Project 11711 released in a 2003 Russian arms catalogue indicate that the design will be able to transport up to 13 main battle tanks or 60 armoured personnel carriers. Accommodation aboard will provide for an embarked military force of 300 troops, with a deck area amidships allowing for the transportation of ISO-standard containers.
Construction of the first-of-class, formally laid down on 23 December 2004, is expected to be completed by the end of 2008. The Project 11711 programme marks the resumption of amphibious ship construction for the Russian Federation Navy after a 15-year hiatus.

I suppose garry means it’s NOT stealth, and I suppose he’s right… The angles are all “straight”. The first ship is to be named “Ivan Gren”.
I suppose it’ll have a different design anyway, since the Russians have been working with stealth angles since the Kirov design and it’s certainly have a mast and such, so the drawing is not accurate anyway.

the new one seems good on reducing rcs, but I’d have loed to see the Ivan class to get these features with a larger helo capacity (minimum 10) in addition to the troops capacity …

seems quite unfinished, no radars and stuff… No mast…
That is what I thought too…
I am a bit surprised at the angles of the surfaces too, it seems I am getting used to everything designed for stealth now… 🙁

Well only Mitrofan Moskalenko is still in service with the Northern fleet, the others are out of service (scrapped?).
What a weird vessel, the new one, seems quite unfinished, no radars and stuff… No mast…

What ever happened to the Ivan Rogov class of ships? They seemed to be the only landing vessels western writers ever seemed to have anything nice to say about… though they would always mention the fact that there was only three and that US vessels were far more capable.

That’s the drawing I was referring to. I’ld much sooner expect the Russians to be building this than an Alligator class ship or a derivative thereoff.

Will it have a well-deck? I know it is quite small, but the French LSD Bougainville is around the same size and has a well-deck.
Is that rectangular area in the centre of the ship an elevator?

I don’t see the need for any russian Landing ships if they intend to do coastal defense only…
The Russian Naval Infantry need a role and I would assume it would be a bit similar to the peace keeping role that the VDV have been used for. The Russian NI would be another good peace keeping force as they are well trained mobile forces. The VDV can be airlifted easily to Europe as that was their role in WWIII, but for global operations the Soviet/Russian Naval Infantry would have the advantage… plus they can operate in harsher environments/situations as they can use heavy armour.
What has happened to those big Soviet hospital ships… are the Russians using them? I would suspect a lot of their medical supplies have gone missing but that sort of thing would be useful in many places around the world… even just doing basic surgery around Africa…

Here news (has torn off from an air base)
At the Kaliningrad ship-building factory “Amber” the first up-to-date ship of the new project for the Navy of Russia today is incorporated. It is big landing ship (BDK) of ocean navigation of the project 11711.In particular, as the general director of the Neva design bureau (Saint Petersburg) Alexander Viglin has told, uniqueness new BDK will be, that it is capable to transport up to 40 units of military technics of various kinds, and landing of a sea landing to coast can be carried out with the help of a special bridge-pontoon.
” The need of Navy fleet of the Russian Federation for such ships equipped with the most perfect domestic technics, fully-automated, is very great “, – has noticed Viglin. On it informs IТАR-TASS.
New series BDK will consist of 5 ships, two of them, total cost 5 billion roubles, will construct at the Kaliningrad factory “Amber”. Construction of the head ship will borrow 3.5 – 4 years, and the subsequent, in view of turned out in Practice, – 1.5 – 2 years. Displacement of the BDK (large landing ship) – 6 thousand tons. The big landing ships did not pawn 15 years in Russia.
A translation form Russian. “Amber” means the Yantar shipyard.
I don’t see the need for any russian Landing ships if they intend to do coastal defense only… At this moment they do have the capabilities to escor these landing forces, but in the near future, when they’ll be equiping their navy with frigates and corvettes, their only use will be landing on their own coast, of which I cannot see the use at the moment, not even in Chechnya.

I have Russia’ Arms 2001-2002 and Russia’s Arms 2004. I don’t think Russia’s Arms 2003 exists.
RA2001-2002 doesn’t have any landing ships in it and RA2004 has the SDK 1700 landing ship which has a standard displacement of 1,600 tons and is much smaller than the vessel described above and the only other landing ship (as opposed to hovercraft) is the Project 11770 Serna which is a 105 ton landing craft designed to land tanks and up to 45 tons of equipment.

Porject 11711? More likely Project 1171.1 by common russian practise, suggesting a derivative of Project 1171. However, project 1171 is the (very old) Tapir (NATO: Alligator) class LST. Seems to me that if the Russians are building new amphibious ship that they would build something a little more up to date. Indeed I have seen lin drawing of at least one new design amphibious ships, which was nothing like the Alligator class. SO, I have my doubts about this even if coming from Janes
