Ryanair launches new services to Spain, to Valladolid, a tiny airport in the middle of Spain. I can´t see the reason for flying to such a small place with only 200000 passengers per year. In any case, the next destination seems to be MY CITY…SANTIAGO.
Local newspapers has just anounced that the airline representatives has showed interest to the local authorities for a daily flight from here. Well……….could I pay little to go to the UK in the future?. I´ll keep my fingers crossed.

Hi
Well, I’m not sure about the profitability comparison; certainly before the Go acquisition, Ryanair had higher profits & lower costs – I don’t know what the current situation is with regards to profits, but Ryanair still have the lowest costs in the industry.
I think the reason Ryanair avoid large airports is simple: congestion & costs. Not only are remote airports less congested (facilitating quick turnarounds), but they are often cheaper and willing to help pay the airline with ancillary costs (marketing the route for example).
Larger airports, who aren’t as desperate to lure low-cost traffic, probably wouldn’t offer the same incentives.
So Ryanair theoretically could make a point of only using major airports, but their costs would increase, their fares would increase and their profitability would decrease. Besides, that’s easyJet’s model. 😉
I think they’re good at what they do…the RYR model of using secondary airports also makes money, so I don’t think they are going to change. Besides, if RYR started flying similar routes to easyJet, a huge and prolonged fare war would start, something I think both airlines would rather avoid…

Well answer this question which airline is more profitable Easyjet or Ryanair, if Easyjet is more profitable than that means that they are doing something right to keep profitabilty on the route and have managed to keep costs down and I guess airfares down as well, why dont Ryanair just fly to these destinations they are well known in Europe and should be able to make these routes profitable!!!, they will make heaps of money im sure if they fly on these routes!!! Well please tell me if this makes any sense at all and if what im saying is correct of incorrect, LOOK FOWARD to an answer!!!

Well, there would be a lot of competition on flights to ALC – especially from easyJet, but also all the other charter and UK LCCs that fly there.
I honestly don’t have a clue what there is to do in Valladolid, is it close to something remotely interesting?!
Ryanair usually insists that airports help to cover its marketing costs plus heavily discount airport charges…the incentive is greater for smaller, isolated airports which stand to gain a lot from direct links to London.
Given NCE is already popular with many airlines, there isn’t much pressure for it to go out of its way to attract RYR services…the other reasons why RYR avoids the larger airports have already been given.

Well :
Marseille Montpellier by car = 2h (at least)
Nimes – Nice = 2.5h~3h
!!!!!!!

The reason Ryanair do not serve Alicante, Nice or Marseilles is due to high landing charges. These airports can also be congested and Ryanair fly to smaller airports nearby. Ryanair cut costs on everything including landing charges and turnaround times. It would be impossible for Ryanair to have 20 minute turnaround times at these busy airports. It uses the following alternative airports though
Alicante = Murcia
Marseilles = Montpellier
Nice = Nimes

Ryanair do fly to Murcia though. That’s not a kick in the arse away from Alicante.

One thing i have noticed it that Ryanair dont fly to Alicante, now why is that, is it that there is too much competition on the route and they have decided to avoid or the same reason but the authorities believe that there is not enough demand for the airline to fly to this destination, the same thing for Nice and Marsielle, i mean these are popular destinations but why doesnt Ryanair fly there?!

Valladolid isn’t going to really attract the UK tourist is it, possibly more for the Spanish traveller? Santiago would be an absolutely brilliant city for Ryanair, it has a lot of potential as a city destination itself I would think, plus a pretty large catchment area for Oviedo, Léon and possibly Vigo and the boarder with Portugal.

Someone posted the new IE routes yesterday.
It seems that they will open a Bilbao-Dublin route.
Are you far away from Bilbao ?
