Will inaugurate a twice weekly nonstop service from London Gatwick to Port Harcourt (Nigeria) on 25th February.
Schedules as follows :
VS623 LGW 0940-1750 PHC 2330-0540 LGW VS624 (Thu)
VS623 LGW 1000-1810 PHC 2330-0540 LGW VS624 (Tue)
Flights will be operated with an Airbus A340-300.
I think this the first scheduled A340 to be operated by Virgin Atlantic out of LGW?

RE: New Virgin Atlantic Route
It used to be that passengers flew to Lagos and connected through to the main centres – Port Harcourt, Abuja, Warri and so on for the oil and places like Kano for other business.
However a lot of European expats expressed concern about the safety of Nigerian airlines. They are collectively the Cubana of Africa, only worse by all accounts. There were also reports of big difficulties connecting through LOS due to corruption.
A friend of mine went out about 5 years ago – going through immigration, he handed his passport over. “One minute, sir.” The chap walked off, then someone else came back to him and said “may I see your passport please”.
“No, your colleague has it”
“One minute please sir”
“Sir, we do not have your passport. You cannot enter the country without one, unless you pay a fee”
So my friend peeled out the greenbacks and his passport seemed to matertialise out of thin air… Obviously, this bribe was on top of the usual entrance fee.
Solution to all these problems:
Reduce LOS frequences and start serving ABV and PHC and even Kano.

These flights are being established to serve the oil industry. They are currently trying to tie up contracts to make it a daily service.

RE: New Virgin Atlantic Route
Is there enough fuel available in PHC (or in Nigeria in general)for refuelling for the return flight?
KLM flies to Abuja since a couple of months and extra unscheduled fuelling stops have happened several times already.

Are the African air travel markets that demanding?

RE: New Virgin Atlantic Route
Good stuff! My friend just got back from a LHR to KLAX flight in their 744 (Virgin). He said it was really good and he enjoyed the entertainment, although he said takeoff was slightly wobbly!
