New warbird flying in Russia

http://www.1tv.ru/news/social/157824

Its winter and its cold – flew during the last couple of weeks.

Looks good though – beautiful lines.

I am sure you can work out what it is.

Isnt that a Hurricane being shot at in the gun camera footage at the 40 second mark ? would that be a finnish one or have they mixed up their footage ?

I posted this over on WIX:

So, in the B&W period clip at about 40 secs, we have a Yak 3 or 9 taking off (maybe?) a P-39/63 pass, and a Hawker Hurricane getting shot down followed by a P-39/63 shot.

No wonder fighter pilots made some dud claims!

Hurricane

Yes, a hole mixture – Yak taking off and Hurricane being shot down!

Richard, thank you.
BTW, what happened to the Yak-3 which was damaged sometimes ago?
(Mark, sorry to hijack the thread!).

You’re very welcome. I am not sure about the Yak. I think it has probably been fixed by now though, as when I was at the Fighter Factory maintenance hanger, the MiG-3 was the only fighter inside being worked on. It is always possible that the work was being done elsewhere, but I honestly don’t think so. Straight answer is that I don’t know though.

Cheers,
Richard

engines

MiG No1 – Russian AM-35 Mikulin
MiG-3 No 2 ’17’ – Allison
MiG-3 No 3 in video – Allison.

Have the history and air to airs so hopefully in one of the monthly (next month!).

This MiG-3 is also for a Russian customer.

Hurricane

You means this one

http://www.jneaircraftrestoration.com/AM274pages/History.html

The Mikulin engined example with all over green was No 1. MiG-3 ’17’ was No2 now with Jerry Yagen and the latest is No3. There are possibly more if 1 or 2 more western buyers were to be interested.

She is a beaut. I would love to see a Bf109 in JG77/JG5 colours flying against a Hurricane IIB of 78IAP in Soviet colours. Also a Il-2 and Fw190 of JG54. might happen one day!! though not all on the same continent!

Isn’t there an ex-Russian Hurricane being restored Stateside? (I know it’s not quite the same thing! :p)

I love the MiG 3. As has been said, a great backdrop for the video.

Bring on the aircraft of the Great Patriotic War! There’s a much better appreciation in the West today of the pivotal contribution made by the Russian people to win WWII.

The Yak displays at Legends are appreciated – let’s now see a Hurricane wearing the Red Star. Fluffy: how about it? They were our allies, after all.

The ones at the fighter factory are most likely going to remain ground-bound. One of their maintenance officers told me that they were pretty squirly to fly, and he didn’t think it was worth the risk. That’s not to say that they won’t change their minds of course.

Cheers,
Richard

Just a personal nitpick…..

Can we please call it a MiG – rather than a Mig ????

From the first letters of the designers last names…..

Mikoyan and (i) Guryevich

I thank you….

Ken;)

You are becoming like Janie (that no longer posts here). Her personal nit pick was the spelling on De Havilland…………sorry should be de Havilland ;):D:D Fits nicely with your Mig VS MiG agenda 😉

Shall we start talking Su´s 😉 An Su-27 is just that, but not an So-27 for me, a bit like Janie´s second hate. Gypsy as opposed to a Gipsy.

Hey, maybe it should be properly called a “MeeG”. (GriN) Or “MuG” (GriN AgaiN)
There is no letter “i” among the 32 letters of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet …. it’s a “u”. Sounds Italian, doesn’t it? Eetssa yuuu. :)-

It looks like things are moving in the right direction with Gerald Yagen’s MiG-3.
1st flight in US should take place this coming spring.
There is even a photo taken this past Friday on ASB forum: http://www.asb.tv/forums/index.php?showtopic=7481&hl=

Does anyone knows if the Polikarpov fighters have flown in the US since their arrival?

Yes, it was ground looped. This is not the through the aircraft and replacing hydraulic and other systems which were, um… well…. lets just say, they needed work.

Richard

Thanks RM!-I remember reading that, now!

Yaegens was groundlooped (i believe they are prone to that) but don’t know if it was repaired or if they are waiting for parts

Yes, it was ground looped. This is not the reason she hasn’t flown in the States though. They are systematically going through the aircraft and replacing hydraulic and other systems which were, um… well…. lets just say, they needed work.

Must say that both machines look superb. Bring one of those an I-16 and an I-15 to legends and fly them in company with the Po 2 currently under restoration as a tribute to Soviet airmen in WWII

Google Translation

Propstrike,
The Google translation leaves a bit to be desired …. “car” is machine, and “cover glass bell” is clear canopy …. but it does give one the overall gist of the article. Rather than the Mig being restored from one small cog, we’d probably say that it was restored “down to the last nut and bolt.”
