New Year's Day Surprise at Southend!

It usually is quiet over the Christmas and New Year period at Southend for maintenance movements, however there still have been a couple of more interesting ones.

OLT Express has returned for a short while, operating flights from Dresden over the Christmas and New Year period.

A Boxing Day arrival to Runway 24:

And onto this morning, where the light was very nice for the usual traffic, bit also for a very nice surprise movement.

Arriving on an early morning flight from Jersey:

Another easyJEt departing – fantastic blue sky.

EI-EHH departing to Dublin…

And now the clear highlight. G-ZAPX has been at Southend to avail cheaper parking between work for over a month. It has only left once since in the rain, but this time made a very powerful departure using less than half of the 6,000 feet of runway off back to Stansted:

Climbing away very steeply!

A fantastic start to 2013, and I hope these are of interest.

Yes Alan there have been quite a lot of diversions after the past few days. On the 18th there were 11 passenger aircraft diverted from London City, 6 of which arrived in 30 minutes.

There were a couple more on 20th, and to my knowledge another 4 on Monday. I’m just about to start another thread which has photos of a couple of the diverted aircraft/

There were a few extra aircraft in this morning. Mostly fog diversions from City airport I would guess ?

Any diversions in today ? Southend being one of the only airports in the area
not affected by the weather.

Thatnks EGTC and 27vet too for your comments. Once you switch to a DSLR its difficult to go back to a point and shoot!

~Alan~ And the 757s are very good stoppers as well – landing on 06 on the old runway I’ve witnessed one turn straight off the old Runway 15! There certainly must be scope for passenger flights with such aircraft – the airport must have it in mind as two of the new terminal stands are designed for up to 757 size… They could have even greater range with full pax. than an easyJet A319….

…….. An impressive departure, and I suspect it may not have even been full power – which really accounts for impressive performance on the 757!

They certainly do go pretty well. I remember seeing one go off at Southend a
few years ago, with what must have been a full fuel load, as it was flying
direct to Canada.
It used less than half of the runway, and went up like the proverbial rocket.

Canada 2000 I seem to recall.

Thanks ~Alan~, Newforest, and Matt-100. Quite sure the Titan wasn’t taking off from grass, although Southend’s narrow runway makes the impression otherwise! An impressive departure, and I suspect it may not have even been full power – which really accounts for impressive performance on the 757!

The photos hear were taken from a variety of spots, although the Titan one was by the Flying Clubs.

Hang onto your hats! 😮 look at all the jet-wash in the 5th pic! I bet you got the beautiful smell of burnt kerosene after that? Excellent pictures.

Nice pictures. In the 5th one, it looked as though PX was taking off on the grass 🙂

Whereabouts do you take most of your pictures from ?
