The rudder could be easily changed between the pointed and rounded types. The Burma pedestal shot shows the aircraft with a rounded type – perhaps that means that the pointed rudder was damaged at some point and the rounded rudder removed off another Spitfire to replace it.

I was looking at the website for PV270, and I noticed something which I’m not sure about.

In the photos of her military service, there is one of her in Italian service and Burmese service. The Burma shot definately shows her with the sharp tail, and I believe the Italian photo does too. The only problem with this, is that she now has the rounded tail. Am I seeing things? What would prompt the tail to be changed over time?

Should be a great one for authentic schemes, though – RAF, Italian Air Force, Israeli Air Force and Burmese Air Force markings. Not to mention service in (at least) two wars…

What happened to the Seafire?

Currently under restoration in Missouri.

“UB415”, actually UB414/SR462.

Very interesting….but the history section stops at the point where the airframe was transferred to the Burmese Air Force Museum, presumably it then was pole mounted..then traded off ? what of its history then…. just curious!

TT

TT,

“UB425” first came to the attention of historians in 1985 when an Australian backpacker published an image of it on pole at Hmawbi, north of Rangoon about 30KMs.

This region, on the Prome Road, was in theory a no-go area for westerners without special permits at that time.

On my first visit to Burma in 1987, a bottle of ‘Johnny Walker’ on the first day got my ‘taxi’ past the military checkpoint and I was able to photograph it along side Seafire “UB415”.

The following day our Defence Attache was able to arrange a formal visit with attending BAF airmen to remove cowlings and open cockpits to investigate identities. PV270 was stencilled on the firewall under all the crud.

The actual Burmese ID is UB424.

It was subsequently recovered to Mingaladon/Rangoon and refurbished before being sold as part of a package to a US Syndicate, where it was sold on to New Zealand.

Where have I seen that photo of the Spit whilst in service with 111 Squadron somewhere before?
