Newark Air Museum ~ 22Dec18

The weather forecast had been holding out for long sunny spells and a decent sunset but there was a bit of rain when I arrived at Newark Northgate station with a nice rainbow, the clouds rolled in mid afternoon, wind chill got up and it was trying to rain as I left Newark Northgate station. Apart from that a very enjoyable day out with new exhibits to see like the Lynx, Chinook, Puma & Buccaneer cockpit, and I do like the new cafe. Very roomy and spacious with floor to ceiling windows so I could look out over the parked aircraft as I munched on my ham and cheese toastie but it still has a bit of a new build rather than food smell to it.

I’m sure that NAM would welcome each visit – as one of their hash tags says #EveryNAMvisitCounts

Yes 91Regal they still do toasted tea cakes in the new café; I understand they may take a bit longer to toast as the ‘current’ industrial taster only toasts one side at a time! 😉

Thank you for the clarification mmitch and I now understand your comments about the appearance of the Puma/Chinook being similar to the Horsa.

I helped facilitate the loan of some long spiral ground tethers to Metheringham to help keep their Dakota on the ground, but I had not heard talk of making their proposed hangar large enough for a glider as well as the Dakota. Likewise in my contacts with the Assault Glider Trust back in 2014 only the Dakota was mentioned. Thank you again for the clarification.

When I visited Metheringham They were restoring a Dakota that had been part of the Assault Glider project
. Their plan is to build a hangar hopefully big enough to take the glider too. Then I saw the Puma nose against the Chinook at a distance and the illusion suggested a Horsa fuselage!

Mothminor & Tony C – the Monospar is progressing steadily and currently lots of original fixtures and fittings are being re-worked for the projects. The project has received good assistance from Denmark and has been supported by parts and drawings repatriated from the southern hemisphere a couple of years ago.

mmitch – I presume that the Horsa link related to the Chinook fuselage, which is most certainly staying at Newark for refurbishment and is due to be utilised as an education space; it has lots of personal connections to the staff and volunteers at Newark. Not quite sure why Metheringham might be interested. NAM’s original Horsa cockpit section headed south in the 1970s to Middle Wallop, in exchange for the Sioux helicopter in Hangar 1.

For anyone thinking of visiting NAM reopens at 10am tomorrow (27th December) info in here details on the website here http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/latest-news

Excellent museum! Managed to get there in September for the first visit in 4 years. Always there are improvements. A trick of the eye from a distance made the helio fuselages look like that of the Horsa glider. But possibly that could end up at Metheringham?

As mentioned aboved, some nice photos’ Brian!

Haven’t been to Newark for quite a while as the last time I went, the Monospar was just a jumble of frames, guess I need to pop up soon!

I’m pleased that you had a good visit Brian and sorry that I was unable to be at the museum on Saturday (parental duties collecting my oldest son from London); as ever some great photos and I’m glad that you liked the new café. Season’s greetings!
