Newark Air Museum Briefing – (2016)

It’s time to start a 2016 Newark Air Museum (NAM) Briefing thread, through which I will endeavour to keep people advised of the day to day activities at NAM.

Again on behalf of everyone at NAM I would just like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who visited in 2015 and in so doing helped NAM achieve another significant increase in visitors. The associated additional income is being used to allow the museum to undertake more restoration and site development projects.

Details will continue to be added to the – Latest News Page on the website

As advised during 2015, the museum secured planning permission for its next development, but it was unsuccessful in securing some of the anticipated grant funds. That said the additional revenue and Gift Aid claims will enable the museum to start work on the new toilet & café project in 2016 – the Project Panini (Mod) Just Giving Fund Raising Page is still active.

The final consultations with the local Planning Department and the Environment Agency are underway and as the Twitter hash tag says everything should be in place to #getusbuilding

As ever, details about the other events such as the Indoor Aeroboot / Aerojumble Table Top Sale – 5 March 2016; etc. can be found on the Events Page here!

Happy New Year everyone and at a convenient time would it be possible for a kindly Mod to lock the 2015 Briefing thread?

Despite the foggy conditions in the local area I’m advised that it’s been quite busy at NAM today. They hope that a few more people will turn-out tomorrow to help us finish 2016 with a bit of a flourish!

Their open cockpit offer tomorrow is in the Exhibition Hall with the Argosy Experience!

Plus there are still some good post-Christmas aviation items on offer in the Museum Shop!

Some access / car parking advice has been posted by NAM on a couple of other fora; that I though might be worth sharing:

A new Car Auction vehicle storage compound that has been built close to the former airfield runway that is now known as, Vulcan Way seems to be confusing some museum visitors this week. While it may look like we are really busy (it would be really nice to think that they were all visitors) these vehicles are just in storage and visitors need to drive along another 100 metres or so to get to the museum.

We may need to revise our directional signage but in the meantime there are a few more details in here!

We are open through and including New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day and then we reopen on Monday 2nd January 2017 – further information in here.

As people might be aware NAM is currently in the middle of a significant development project for its Southfield Site (the land it owns) and it would be a great help for the museum’s cash-flow if it could attract extra visitors during this festive season.

There are just two days left for people to visit before it closes for three days over Christmas – so there’s a great chance to view the aircraft displayed inside & out and also to do that bit of last minute Christmas shopping (no admission fee if just shopping – free car parking right outside).

Christmas opening details / times – can be found on this part of the NAM website!

Just be wary of possible weather issues tomorrow from Storm Barbara!!

A quick reminder that NAM is open each day this week right up until & including Friday 23rd December; all visits are vital to the NAM fund raising effort in support of the improved visitor facilities, which are currently being installed.

Reminder that there’s no museum admission fee due if people just want to browse the Museum Shop – last access to which is 3.40pm at this time of the year.

I understand that plastic kits are proving quite popular with lots of interest in the Trumpeter Wellingtons; along with the Gulf War (Anniversary) Tornado & Jaguar kits. NAM still has lots of quality aviation books in stock e.g. Black Box Canberras; and of course its own Newark Air Museum history book!

Full Shop info in here.

You’re quite right it had to be done, which has left me blushing a bit! An edit will be on the way soon!! 😮

It was a good day at NAM yesterday, with some good interest in the cockpit of XR757 and some very happy Lightning enthusiasts, who managed a sit in the cockpit thanks to the generous attendance of the cockpit owner.

The book and diecast sale went well and the remaining items will be left set up in the Dambusters Hut details of how to view these can be found here!

Good to report that NAM is receiving a steady flow of Indoor Aeroboot/Aerojumble bookings for the March sale.

Finally for now, last minute heads-up for a Shackleton open cockpit session today at NAM, c/w ex-Shackleton MR3 pilot as your guide.

dh82jon – my understanding regarding the colour of the paint on the Auster AOP 9 in Hangar 1, is either a rouge tin of paint,

Is it pink too then?

Sorry, had to be done

Another view of the Harvard rebuild project is included in an update to the work gallery on the NAM website.

This also features a fresh photo of the Monospar project and the TriStar Sim reassembly.

Sorry to disappoint on the ‘in-service’ photo front for the AOP 9 – a mere confirmation of a definitive serial number would represent a significant step forward! 😉

Meanwhile the museum website has been updated regarding the pre-owned book & diecast sale on Saturday 10 December. Via this weblink you can find a list of the publishers of some of the second hand books in the sale; plus details of a few more items e.g. black & white photos etc. that will also be in the sale.

Thank you for the update, I had hoped you would be able to wow me with some pictures of grey/green in service, but alas a story of mix up and confusion will do nicely!

dh82jon – my understanding regarding the colour of the paint on the Auster AOP 9 in Hangar 1, is either a rogue tin of paint, or miss-communication regarding the colours. I expect that it will eventually revert to brown & green.

Yesterday I did notice that the Monospar has had fabric applied to the underside of the fuselage, so that project is progressing as well!

While we are asking about Newark projects could I ask about the Auster AOP9, I see the tail is now in a grey/green finish and wondered if that was a cammo/style used on the 9 (brown/green seems the norm). I can’t find any reference to it used on others but I do think it looks really nice and good luck with the project.

Tin T – I’m not aware of any formal decision on the Harvard markings; other than judging by the colours on the completed wing it will be gloss yellow based. I personally would like to see it go into RCAF markings, but I may not win that decision making process.

Anon – yes the work on the Harvard is coming along quite nicely. The new Restoration Manager is a new recruit from within the NAM membership; he starts tomorrow and I understand that there will be a write-up in the next Dispersal c/w a brief resume. I suspect that you will not know him.

Harvard is coming along nicely, T.O. – certainly a big leap since I saw it a few years ago.

Who is the new Restoration Manager, someone we know – or a new recruit?

Anon.

Thanks Howard. Any plans yet as to what scheme it’s going back into? Some early post-war RAF scheme would look terrific!
