Newark Air Museum Briefing

Following the recent discussion about dedicated museum sections / threads I have secured ‘three greens’ from the museum trustees to start this online briefing thread about activities at Newark Air Museum.

They have asked me to point out that the most regularly updated section of the NAM website is the News Page. This contains all the latest news, special offers and event information.

However to start things off I will just highlight a few of the current items from the museum, but rather that just a long text I will post details of the links to the relevant pages so you can pick and choose what if anything you would like more details on.

The Aircraft Recognition Competition is still running, it is free to enter and there are prizes to be won.

Regular Aeroboot updates will appear as and when they are released and in due course Cockpit-Fest details will start to appear.

Another major event happening in the next three months is the Tribute to the V-Force event in April, which should see another update fairly soon.

The museum has also just registered with the Just Giving fund raising scheme and the link explains why this is important to the museum.

Finally this time round the museum is still awaiting further news on its possible acquisition of a Nimrod R1 and the current status of that project is detailed here!

If anyone has any questions I will endeavour to try and get meaningful responses for you.

The NAM website News Page has recently been updated with details of a new Corgi die-cast arrival – of a type much speculated about in these parts! 😀

Former V-Force personnel sought

An appeal letter has been sent out to a wide range of press contacts across the UK, if you know of any former V-Force personnel or people that have associations with Valiants, Vulcans or Victor please ask them to get in touch. Below is an extract from the letter; N.B. the event is also open to the general public.

“As before the reunion side of the event is being organised by a team of former V-Force Officers, whose aim is to bring together as many former aircrew and ground support staff as possible. This team is keen to hear from any former personnel and full details of the activities planned and how to join the reunion can be gathered from their excellent reunion website www.vforcereunion.co.uk

The museum has been supporting this effort by trying to establish contact with personnel who are felt still likely to live in areas around the 10 designated V-Force Bases at:

RAF Coningsby
RAF Cottesmore
RAF Finningley
RAF Gaydon
RAF Honington
RAF Marham
RAF Scampton
RAF Waddington
RAF Wittering
RAF Wyton

Plus no V-Force event would be possible without also mentioning RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and the various dispersal airfields around the world, too many in numbers to mention.

Additional contact work has been tried around the various manufacturing sites for the Vickers Valiant at Weybridge; Avro Vulcan at Woodford, Chadderton, Bracebridge Heath and Bitteswell; and the Handley Page Victor at Cricklewood and Radlett.”

Indoor Aeroboot News

Another Indoor Aeroboot update has recently gone live on the News Page of the museum website! This is now showing that 60% of the tables have now been sold; and to quote from the site …. “It’s still holding true that half of the 24 table bookings taken so far are from ‘new’ participants to Indoor Aeroboots at the museum!”

Chipmunk WB624

Never one to miss a bandwagon! 😀

Whilst it’s open season on the Chipmunk – anything showing WB624 in service would be appreciated by NAM.

Ironically I understand that WB624 will feature in their next Dispersal newsletter with a set of pictures from its time with its previous owner, the Aeroplane Collection. 🙂

Recent Aircraft Moves Around The Site

I hear from NAM that some of the exhibits in the front corner of the site by the car parking area are being moved. Not sure exactly what has happened so far but I understand that the plan is for the Meteor T7 to be moved forward towards the café; the Dove moved across towards the Vulcan; and the Canberra PR7 pulled back into the corner.

I also understand that some work will also be undertaken to spruce up the Vulcan nose and repaint some of the underside in advance of the Tribute to the V-Force event in April.

Indoor Aeroboot Latest – 18.02.10

Another Indoor Aeroboot update has recently gone live on the News Page of the museum website! This is now showing that there are only 3 tables left to sell for the April event. 🙂

Quoting from the site …. “18 of the tables booked are from ‘new’ participants to Indoor Aeroboots at the museum! If you still wish to book a table we suggest you get in touch quickly if you do not want to miss out!”

No problem Scott. The February members’ newsletter has just come out and this year looks as though it could be really exciting.

There are various new initiatives coming through to do with volunteers, education and the proposed new Visitor Centre; some good looking events – Indoor Aeroboot, 17 April; Tribute to the V-Force, 24 & 25 April; Cockpit-Fest & Aeroboot, 19 & 20 June; plus some potentially interesting acquisitions might occur if everything works out.

Until Sunday there’s still the chance to catch some open cockpits: today they had four open and tomorrow I believe it’s a favourite – the Vulcan! 😀

I understand that the forms etc for Cockpit-Fest are currently being prepared and should be circulated fairly soon. The museum is currently waiting for some external advice on a few issues.

As far as I’m aware there would be no problem in bringing along a tail section, but as I understand things I don’t think this would add to any judging of the cockpit itself.
